Re: Wine
Think French wine a little over-rated. Prefer a good Spanish wine above all. A good 'oaky' Rioja and if feeling flush then a good wine from the Ribeira Del Duero region. Best of all 'PESQUERA'.

Re: Wine
I used to like the wine lodges in Liverpool , dark drab places which looked as though the insides had ever been painted. Long bars , wooden decks and wine barrels , no T.V.s or juke boxes to disrupt the conversations. After an afternoon on large Ausie white you would come out with a glowing bronzy ready to take on the world.

I agree but the best wine in spain is vega sicilia also from the river duoro area.It sells from over 100Euro a bottle if you can find some .I had a lady friend 20 years ago who presented me with a bottle from her ex husbands wine cellar.Pesquera is also very good and I,ve seen that at 500 euro a bottle in restuarants.Over here Lidl sells a Spanish wine called vespral its cheap and very good value for money but they may not sell it in the uk

Re: Wine
Penfolds in the early 50s in Melbounre was Four Shillings and Six Pence a bottle. equivalent to of twenty two and a half pennies today..
When the 6 o`clock swill was on, load up with bottles of Penfolds and back to the ship,
In those days they called me "The Penfold Kid,"
Today in Sainsburys it is about Nine Pounds a bottle.
Cheers , hic!

Ah, memories of the six o'clock swil, w,hen we were in Walleroo in the 60s we had ' acquired' a couple of bike before we left Italy, as soon as the bosun called knock off, we were on them and away, the laugh came shortly after 6 o'clock seeing us trying to return to ship, with the carry out, and sometimes two on a bike, happy days, kt

Re: Wine
We've found a couple of 'clean skins' (small wineries selling through merchants) chardonnay and merlot at A$30 a half dozen case. Been quaffing it for years. Special occasions warrants a browse along the shelves. When we moved to Jakarta in 1976 I was browsing the old Kota Bahru Chinese shops and found some old European wines. I checked them out and they were in perfect health. They were glad to see them go 'because they were too old'. They were mostly fantastic and this lasted for a couple of years until someone must have put them wise.
In a Manila supermarket in 1983 there was a bin of 'quick sales' in which there was three bottles of old vintage Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes. I paid the equivalent of A$15 for them.
