Just had a few pints and a good chat with this guy,he is a Falklander actually, started off on the Survey ships then joined the MN at sea all his life Cappy and Brian would've been very interested talking to him regarding the NUS etc.He never received a NUS pension but he reckons about 69/70 they brought out a superan/scheme which you paid into and he gets about 6 grand a year.He said when the NUS became the RMT he said the NUS didn't join their pension scheme if they would've done he would've got more of a pension than what he does now.He was talking about Maritime House where Dennis Skinner and the Rt.Hon.John Prescot had flats,John Prescots son living in his apartment, the building was eventually sold for millions.Had a talk about Springbok and many other thing maritime (beer issues etc) a very interesting afternoon.

Wheelan in 2011 agreed in principle to guard less trains, again it was safet then, what changed his mind?

Vic, You will never see a train guards job advertised as a vacancy anywhere, The reason a person cant walk into the job you can apply internally to upgrade from say platform staff to rolling stock, But you have to go threw a train guards school and learn and pass your rules and regulations amongst other things this isn't 6 weeks learning to wave a flag or open a door or blow a whistle, These are rules and regulations regarding all types of rolling stock, Passenger, Coach and Wagon, Oil and Chemical trains, You have a hell of a lot to learn take it from me, All these trains are different couplings, Buffers, Roads, ETC.. The guard travels in the back loco or carriage known as the break van, Because to this day he can stop these trains by applying the hand break if the need arises, Any train is a 4 handed job and any qualified guard can be used on any of these trains. Because he has studied and passed his rules and regulations, I am yet to meet a train driver willing to take single handed all the responsibility and never did when I was on the railway. Therefore you cant distinguish amongst train guards because they have all passed there rules and regulations and just like lets say all ships cooks are all equal. I was on the passenger trains on the Merseyrail network but I could at any time book on and be handed a days docket to work a freight train out of Edge Hill sidings which I did on many occasion. I hope a few on this forum give that some thought because they never see a guard on a freight train and the safety aspect that's involved, People think they are conductors wrong I never met Reg Varney in train depot in my life, They where bus conductors not bus guards........................ You will never run a rail system without train guards and you cant make distinctions they are all qualified train guards. Regards Vic I am finished with this thread I rest my case All the very best to you and your for xmas have a great on Terry.

The Irony of the left wing unions is lost on all of them. Scargill, Red Robbo, Mcgahey . Mcluskie eta al want a soviet style government in the UK. The sad thing is that they cannot see the ramifications of such a style of government. Under the old Soviet block style they would be locked up sent to gulwag as dissenters, no freedom of speech.

Dave, There are Railway Systems, And Railway Systems, These little Metro Lines that run from one end to another. Are not Railway Networks, The fat controller can run them along with a little guy called Thomas, I have just bought one myself for my 4 year old grandson.
