Trying to change people's mind on the miners is a waste of time so will not try only to say this. Thatcher came into power with a mandate to destroy the power of the union movement.
To do so the foundation stone N.U.M. had to fall first then all unions would topple. She was right and she succeeded.
The power during the strike was not the union but the mothers, wives and girlfriends who stood by their men step by step and refused to let them surrender even when destitute and the cops waving wads of money under their noses on the picket line.

The `strike was illegal and there had never been a ballot, no one knew what the strike was about, So why should a Miner who had the best wages of any Industry give up his wages and lose his job?? because of Scargill? I was at Bentley near Doncaster, my knowledge is not from the Daily Mail or Sun. When I wanted to return I was prevented from doing so by South Yorkshire Police, I was stopped from driving on a motorway although I had not broken any law I could not travel freely in my own country. Such was the power of the police.
Wait for the inquiry and ask yourself why so many in authority do not want an inquiry to take place. What have they got to hide ?
