Few would deny your tremendous contribution to this site, much of which I generally find of interest.

However, having read various comments made by you in recent months (concerning Syria, the Middle-East and elsewhere) it wasn't hard for me to discern a certain bias. It was this seeming lack of balance with which I took issue. Instead of addressing the points I raised, by way of robust debate, you choose to evade the issue and respond with a flippant disdain which does you little credit. No doubt encouraged by your lead and reverting to type, your friend, Cappy, couldn't wait to have a 'pop' at me and with his usual literary 'flare' made a few incendiary remarks and immediately labelled me a troublemaker (I'll not dignify his 'post' with a direct response, however if my 'biting' remarks are deemed out of order I feel sure the Moderator will advise me in due course). While we are on the subject, John, tell me this, are you two joined at the hip? I cannot speak for others but for me your tag-team routine sometimes wears a bit thin.

For many months now, your regularly voiced opinions have enjoyed free rein on this site. It seems other members are in full accord with your every word unless, of course, wiser heads than I have shown a reluctance to 'rock the boat' - and if so more's the pity. On the other hand, I raise a conflicting opinion to your own, voice it in no uncertain terms and wow!all hell breaks loose. True democracy at work ! - Ignore the debate, John, and thereby silence all dissension - way to go !!!

It never once occurred to me you were/are a protected species - I now stand corrected!

Sorry mate I just can't remember the title, Marian sent me two titles but still cannot confirm it it was one of them. After reading your post I think you were very lucky, as I don't think they even checked whether the blokes they shot were in the IRA, just tramping in the bush was enough.

Must be about 7 months to the day since the last out burst cappy. I had just come in from the hospital after Gwens first hip replacement, today have just come in after the second hip being done. Think my movements are being monitored, as long as are the right movements couldn't care less. See you've survived the holiday period in one piece. Is the Ark floating yet. Will just play patience in the hospital for the next week or so till she gets home. Cheers JS.

##give our regards to gwen john .....ark is the true word in the dales at the moment.....also with flooding in york etc we have intermitent communication in both telephone and internet ..but it is not a great prob.....more a nuisance ...but then who gets aday without a nuisance of one sort or the other ........some are just not worth bothering with......regards cappy

I think we should revert to the subject of the title 'Syria' and cease these acrimonious exchanges that have crept in, as they are wont to do. Comparing one situation with another is sometimes saying an apple is a pear and vice versa. It is a democratic site and everyone is entitled to their say and this has been and is a very useful forum for intelligent discussion from all contributors and is a constant source of education, information, interest and amusement and we have in our various ways learnt a lot from each other and long may we continue to do so. So gentlemen swords back in their scabbards gather round the fire and raise your glasses to unity and the Merchant Navy past and present.

I cant understand why a so called democratic government would let people starve to death? children are eating leaves from trees even catching dogs to eat. there was an old saying hungry bellies do strange things why are we the rest of the world doing nothing?? take out of power from any leader that will let this happen what is nato the united nation doing they have turned into a toothless lion and should be shaken up by countries across the planet who pump billions into these organisations every year?? just my view.. jp

John mate, it is all about politics and power. Today the UN will be allowed to deliver food to the area, an area cut of by government troops for almost a year. Why, because the gov could and did ti make appoint with those they consider to be rebels. Those people who do not want to be held back by a gov that is only concerned with one section of the population, the section that will make sure they stay in power.
But in fact the Un is about as useful as the proverbial on a bull, no power what so ever to do anything if one of the security council members uses the power of veto.

#53... ref. your post, how can I qualify, is similar as put out by the media where they put their own interpretation on what is told them, so just maybe you have missed your real vocation in life. This is a media for usually seamen to air their thoughts, I can guarantee you because I do not declare by abhoration for the Russians it is not your life saving duty to report such as a Russian lover. Read the posts and don't look for other meanings which aren't there and never were. As for people getting at you they are just returning the fire you put out to air. As my last operation is now over I don't expect any further flares fired for at least 7 months, any remarks you have which worry you about my political aims address them to the site and not to me, I have heard all this twaddle before. Maybe you are getting a bit doolally tap, in which case you will have most of our sympathy, otherwise any garbage directed individually will be treated with the contempt it deserves and not replied to as doesn't deserve to be. This is the second time now of such, I promise you there will not be a third. The word of address I was trying to remember was insidious, look it up in the dictionary. JS

Gentlemen we are still in the season of goodwill. More disturbing things are happening close to home.

280 British soldiers are being summoned to face an inquiry into alleged atrocities during the first Iraq conflict, the accusers being aided by British lawyers financed by British legal aid and the inquiry instigated by the British Government. Recruitment into the Services is at an all time low, have our politicians ever wondered why, have they any idea of the devastating affects they are having on current serving personnel who may get killed because they hesitate to return fire in certain situations. I cannot think of one serving MP on all sides of the House who has experienced being under fire. Our Opposition party Defence Secretary has taken minimum £48,000 in donations from the Law firm acting on behalf of the accusers and she sees nothing immoral in this. What incentive is there for anyone to join the Services to aid defence of the realm when their own country is ready to stab them in the back, we are so short of personnel we will have to borrow naval personnel from the French Navy to man our new aircraft carriers when they come into service. A once proud nation has turned into a nation of beggars and traitorous lawyers only interested in making a quick buck at the Nations expense. A sad world we live in.

Another 'you couldn't make it up' An Iraqi refugee who smuggle 3000 refugees into the UK, who is currentl on trial for this crime has refused to be extradited to Belgium as it would infringe his human rights and the right to a family life! He is wanted in Belgium for being part of a smuggling gang with terrorist connections. His lawyer said it would be a travesty of justice if Mr Basak Ahmed Sleman was extradited because he has no identity documents and has lived in the UK for fifteen years. I wonder if he has been receiving benefits without any identity documents, (I doubt I would get any!) not that he needed any benefits as it is estimated he has made more than £3.5 million from his refugee enterprise. What I want to know is how an accused can 'refuse' to be extradited, oh and by the way he is on legal aid, as he is unemployed!

#60 In my opinion these Lawyers are Parasites. They allegedly engage people in Afghanistan and Iran to go touting for business.
Legal Aid should only be for UK citizens, anyone else that wants to sue put the money where your mouth is.
