Double standards
I was reading a novel, in which the ex-head of the Security Police in an African country, has been caught and manhandled by a mob. While in power he had been responsible for the torture and killing of thousands of people. A young army officer turns up and arrests him, then shoots him in the back of the head. The Hero of the book is present, and is absolutely horrified, because even though this man is a mass murderer, he is entitled to a fair trial. This same hero has just shot dead two unsuspecting sentries who might have interfered with his plans. But maybe the sentries weren't entitled to a 'fair trial' because they didn't commit mass murder? A perfect example of today's double standards, don't you think?

Re: Double standards
I have seen it happen in Sumatra 54 years ago, when a young American was executed, no trial.
. So maybe they will give a man a `fair` trial and then shoot him. problem solved.
That is the way of the world, today, yesterday and in the future.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: Double standards
You were reading a novel that is a fictitious prose narrative of book length, but in real wars people die , not always for the right reasons

Re: Double standards
Terrorism, only succeeds when it reaches its target and really terrorises people. Different forms of terrorism, and can only be fought on using the same method as the terrorists use, scare the living daylights out of them, let them know they are going to receive the same justices as they mete out, you cant fight these bits of crap like with the Marquis of Queensbury Rules. Hitler maintained his jurisdiction over Europe by the same means, if a german soldier was mudered by the resistance, he would take any number of civilians be it 20 or a 100 and shoot them. The british army in Burma during the last war took a leaf out of the Japanese book and formed the Chindwits under General Wingate ( then Capt.) and gave the japs a fright of their lives in certain situations. Any war being faught on one side only with terrorist tactics and the other side trying to be human, they are going to lose with more loss of life. JS

Re: Double standards
Thats like Hollywood standards Braid. The hero shooting all sorts of soldiers and so called baddies, and then one of the Goodies gets shot and the next 15 minutes of film is him dying a glorious death. What a lot of codswallop the general public especially our youngsters watch this drivel, and they think its real. Those extras in the movie playing the part of soldiers or whatever, dont have a life and are all nonentitys. For those of us who lived through the blitz and such as youngsters know a little bit more than what the present day modern person has to get used to. I still cant get over these 3 on and 3 off workers suffering trauma related illnesses, what sort of state are they going to be in, in a warlike situation. People nowadays live in a never never land. Supported by the state if as some desire, and go all through life knowing no better. Maybe martial law in a country might make some of them wake up to what life is all about. All those who died in two world wide wars did not fight and die for what we are going to finish up with. JS

Right John, my first-ever memory is of being thrown under the kitchen table when the bombs came down - yes, they did bomb Scotland. They don't make kitchen tables like that any more either.

I slept under a steel table for the duration of the war.
Remember going to sleep surrounded with solders boots, as they eat dinner.
We had several billeted with us.
