What was your worst present ever?
A few years ago in the month of December my mum and I were sitting in a Stone
Merchants yard waiting to place an order for a new headstone for my long departed
grandparents. Killing time [excuse the pun] and talking to the receptionist the conversation soon got round to presents. Comparing stories she won hands down.
Her husband then all of twelve years in the early 1950's shared a bedroom with three of his seven siblings in an four story Glasgow tenement....... without garden. Nearby stood the infamous "Barras Market" [where almost anything could be purchased] His working mother having left her shopping too late on Christmas eve told her son at bedtime that there was a 'special present' for him alone. He was so excited he could hardly sleep in anticipation for a much longed for bicycle in order to escape the mayhem at home. Christmas morning he awoke to find in his corner of the room a magnificent but disappointing tepee.

Marian, a lot of the lads on here have ended up with presents they didn't want! guess I was one of the lucky ones and no one gave me a present.

Re: What was your worst present ever?
The worst present ever was one I never received, first day at primary school. mum dumped me with a pile of total strangers and I was told to sit here for the present, sat all day and was really, really good, but never got a present.

Re: What was your worst present ever?
Home on leave one time for a few weeks when was single. Went out and bought myself a new pair of shoes as a present to myself. Beautiful I thought, an orangy red. When going out that night couldnt find so asked my mother had she seen, she produced this pair of ordinary black looking shoes, said she had taken them back to the shop and changed them as said they looked much nicer. Had to remind her I was not 12 years of age anymore, had to be very diplomatic about it. The old man just laughed when he came in from work. Didnt spend too much time at home during my working life, but can very well see how some who spent their life ashore had total different values than those who were self sufficient and worked away. I suppose to some parents their kids never grow up in their eyes. John S
