    Hi Louis, hope you enjoy it if it comes, one weakness in your argument re Eton schoolboys, at the moment they ar Scottish Eton schoolboys in the top jobs!!!!, i believe thats been a plot of the Scots for years , Cameron, Brown etc, all sent to ruin us, I,m not holding my breath, regards KT

    I was born and brought up in Scotland, worked for a few years in England, emigrated to Australia, and have lived and worked in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, now domiciled in PNG. Having last been in Scotland in 1966, I'm not really involved. But my honest opinion is that if Scotland went independent it should have been 150 years ago, when Scottish scientists, engineers, doctors etc were the best in the world. As one famous Frenchman said back then, "If you want to know, ask a Scotsman." As one English nobleman said a little more recently "Scotland is the most influential small nation since ancient Greece." I think it's much too late to be thinking about it now. Besides, I'm proud of being Scottish, but I'm also proud of being British.

    Over in San Francisco and Los Angeles a few years back, and the trams in one of those 2 cities was, designed and built by a Scottish Engineer. Maybe someone will have more information than my brain can retain. JS

    I don't think Los Angeles has anything resembling trams, at least not when I was there. On the other hand I can still remember jumping on a cable car in San Francisco - in the middle of the street - and swooping down this steep switchbacking hill from my Holiday Inn towards the Pyramid and Fisherman's Pier. But I was too busy hanging on to notice who made the cable car! In Ceaser's Palace in Las Vegas, on the same trip, (I was a rich businessman then) my beautiful little Eurasian wife spent nearly six hours at the in-house hairdresser. I worriedly went looking for her just as she finished. Took one look, and said "God Almighty Liz, there are African American women here who spend a fortune trying to get those kinks out of their hair."

    In Sungei Golok in Southern Thailand, there's an old steam locomotive in the park which, according to the notice was made by "the North British Locomotive Co in Springburn, England.. " A bit ominous for the upcoming referendum!

    How about a free and independent ENGLAND ruled by a Great Dictator, [non political] for five years to sort out all the whimps and PC and human rights idiots, and make us great again.
    .
    .Now if Scotland became Independent , what about all the Scots who live south of the border, will they all go back North,?
    That would create a massive housing and job shortage. Plus a great strain on all their services including hospitals etc.
    Now if a Great Dictator sent everyone back over the border what would Salmon do then.?

    the manb behind the San Francisco Cable Cars was Andrew Smith Hallidie was born Andrew Smith later adopting the name Hallidie in honor of his uncle, Sir Andrew Hallidie, who had been a royal physician to William IV and to Queen Victoria. His birthplace is variously quoted as London in the United Kingdom. His grandfather, Smith, a Scottish schoolmaster and soldier during the Napoleonic wars, had served at Waterloo. His father, Andrew Smith, had been born in Fleming, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, in 1798, and his mother, Julia Johnstone Smith, was from Lockerbie, Dumfrieshire.

    Andrew Smith's father, also called Andrew Smith, was an engineer and inventor with several patents to his name, most importantly those for the making of wire ropes, granted from 1835 to 1849. The younger Andrew Smith was initially apprenticed to a machine shop and drawing office. In 1852 both father and son set sail for California, where the father had an interest in some gold mines in Mariposa County. These proved disappointing, and the father returned to England in 1853. The son, however, remained in California, and became a gold miner whilst also working as a blacksmith, surveyor and builder of bridges.

    In 1856, whilst working on the construction of a flume at a mine at American Bar, Hallidie was consulted over the rapid rate of wear on the ropes used to lower cars of rock from the mine to the mill. These ropes were wearing out in 75 days. Hallidie improvised machinery to make a replacement wire rope, which lasted two years, and in the process began wire rope manufacture in California. This meant he is regarded as the " Father " of the modern Cable Car rope hauled system

    Brian, these are all the unanswered questions, as they would not be in Europe, would they have to apply for a visa to work in Britain??, Portsmouth is watching with interest, having just lost out to Scotland in the shipyard business??, would that now return to Britain, so many doubtful events. We shall see soon. I believe that Salmon must now be doubting himself, if the vote goes his way, he has to produce the goods for all the people he has made promises to, KT

    Hi KT. The Government has just given Glasgow an order to build Three Royal Navy Ships. first one to be delivered in 2017. So if they decide to opt out of the Union then the order should be cancelled, we do not want our Navy ships built by foreigners, because that is what they will be, not British anymore.
    So for Salmon to accept the Order and then become out of the United Kingdom is just like him kicking us in the goolies.
