Re: Mersey Memories
Hi Jim,
sorry about that, I must have clicked on the wrong link, That one gave me a blue screen withy copyrite on it.
Yes No. 40 is definately the Dunedin Star disguised as Roland. Six hatches, two on the fore deck one amidships and three on the after deck the samson posts I am swinging on is there, and that funnel, I think it was the biggest funnel ever on a cargo ship in those days. a big job when we got a `Job and Finish` painting it
in Cape Town but we did it and got ashore early.
Cheers
Brian

The Dunedin Star was built as The BOLTON CASTLE, oddly enough the name of a pub I sometimes drink in, when it was built Nat Lofthouse was the first manager, It was bought on the stocks by Blue Star and became the Dunedin Star,in 1950.
I sailed on her in 1956, and in 1968 it was renamed Roland,
Blue Star and Lamport and Holts were always swapping ships and renaming them, they were associated under the Vesty ownership.
.
Here is me white lead and tallowing the span wire between the two samson oposts at No 4 hatch and no safetety net.
Cheers
Brian.
And of course as we all know if it had ablack funnel it could well have been the Boltonstan castle.

Re: Mersey Memories
Well do remember Gladstone Dock joining the Duchess of Bedford There was also the Duchess of Richmond and it was pitch black it was bitterly cold and armed sentries everywhere as well as the dock police I thought should I back down and go home but no I carried on and that was to be the best ship I ever signed on

Hi John
I dont think Lou is that old,
It was a later Duchess of Richmond which I think became the Empress of Canada after the war and burned in the Gladstone January 1953,
The Duchess of Bedford became the Empress of France after WW2 and went for scrap in December 1960
Cheers
Brian.
