I'm also one of the guilty ones with numerous posts, but I would rather talk/exchange views with fellow seamen than people I have no compatible experience with, and who wouldn't know what the hell I am talking about which is what facebook seems to be all about, accumulating thousands of 'friends'. At least when I talk on here I am having memories awakened and as for being tied to the machine, think what you will, but I walk at least four miles everyday, go dancing and other activities, but the computer stays at home and is not an umbilical cord as it is with the young and not so young who never seem to observe what is going on around them, even texting whilst driving and at my age I don't need new technology in my life, I struggle with what I've got.

Keep up the good work and keep the Merchant Navy alive with exchanging views on this site

Itwas ironlc the other day reading the comments of two Snr.Members complaining about Facebook users wasting their lives sitting in front of a PC.

T he gents in question,going by the number of posts they have submitted to this site would leave me, a regular user of Fb. for dead.

If they bothered to spend a bit time working out the ins and outs they might have a different opinion of the thing,a great bit of new tech'.

One certain way John. Cut the electric for 23 hours. If you miss however will have to wait again for 23 hours. I have an automatic computerised sprinkler system with 4 stations for the garden. Un fortuanetly they dont tell you that after 10 years or so they run out of Data re the dates. So had to go back in years to find what year corresponded with this year as regards say today Sunday 30 March 2014. A bit of useless information for you is the year 2003. So far as my computer sprinkler system knows it is still 2003. Obviously a well worked out ploy by the manufacturers to get you to rebuy. However didnt know how devious I was also. Cheers John S.

put main power off wait asecond or two then switch on ...clock should rea d zero then reset clock ....if it doesnt work ....eat an hour later eacch day

Another alternative John, as somewhere on the continent will be having the same time as your cooker hopefully France as they are usually as thick as two short planks , without being racially prejudiced.Sell it to them.The only problem then will be you will have to do some fast talking as beleive they are on a different cycles system than the uk. Take Rob with you, he will soon bamboozle them with science, be careful about Mary though if she wants to tag on for the day. Check with Cappy that she is not non gratia in France. Cheers John S

I proudly informed wife before we went to bed last night, just before midnight, that I had adjusted all the clocks including the cooker one, to BST.
Woken up by an incessant pinging noise coming from downstairs at 0130.
Investigations showed that the noise was coming from the cooker and that instead of adjusting the clock I had instead put the cooker timer on to alert us that the 1.5 hours cooking time was completed. The bloody oven was not even on!!!! Much cursing and swearing ensued before I got the bloody thing to shut up. Went back to bed with clock still showing old time but expect wife will be able to sort it out some time today.....she's good at that sort of stuff cooking).

Just think how much better it would have been for us oldies when we were at sea if the technology was available to us, such as Skype, emails ,computer etc, which they apparently do have today, enabling you to stay in contact with families, i suspect it would have saved a few marriages etc. I never sailed in a ship with a washing machine even, just a galvanised bucket, and some sod kept pinching that when my back was turned, KT

we had a washing machine when i was a kid, it was called a dolly. a stool with a long handle which you put into the wash and twirled around. then we got a better one same type of stool but worked by pulling and pushing a handle back and forth; the first semi automatic washing machine.

gazza. facebook is a very nosy social site. it puts you in touch with people you don't want to talk to, which caused trouble in my case.
