May be a silly question but do Merchant Mariners receive a pension? Just looking for another avenue to trace my father. So, if you do receive a pension, who issues it? Thanks, all.

Have you got his NI number or his Membership Number of the Pension Fund??.
Ask them and give as much detail as you have. D.O.B. Discharge book Number, N.I. Number etc etc..

Re the MNOPF-it's a good well-managed one as far as pension funds are concerned.I 'released' mine 4 years ago(20 years seagoing and 17 years 'deferred' service) when I was 55,and it's a very welcome monthly sum,plus I got a lump sum.
Mind you,I paid in for 20 years,and it was quite a fair chunk out of my salary at that time.

So no regrets then.

whilst on this item, how many MN sailors left the sea and worked ashore then moved to a different continent? well if you moved to places like Canada, New Zealand Australia or South Africa, your regular pension will have been frozen and then paid to you at 65 at the rate it was paid in the year you left blighty.
no indexing what so ever, there are various organisations in these countries trying to change this.
if i had moved to France, Spain, Germany, Lybia USA i would now be getting a full pension, does that make sense?
anyone who has any influence as a group are asked to support this and lobby your local MP. on behalf of those MN members living abroad.

I left the U.K. in 1981 to work in the Bahamas and decided to pay class 2 contributions into the U.K. system. I only did this for two years, so from age 53 til 65 did not pay in any contributions. Since 1984 have lived in Florida, the move was due to my employment with a Miami based cruise line.
At age 65 I was granted a U.K. pension, they pay me 89% which is fair enough considering that I did not continue to pay into the system until age 65.
Being in the U.S. one is entitled to annual increases, if any.

Well, MNOPF won't tell me a thing, due to "data protection". I guess no surprise there. Damn! Apologies, can I say damn on this site? They did suggest I contact Nautilus International, which is apparently the Officers Union for seafarers. I've been on the site and it looks like I have to join as a member before I can post anything, and it's not free. Are any of you gents familar with Nautilus International? Not sure if this is worth my while, since I don't think my dad was ever an officer.

Jacyn, if your father was a rating when did he finish with the sea.? The MNRPF didn't start until 1978 so if he left before then he would be entitled to nothing unless he was with a company that had its own ratings fund and I don't think there were many of them.
