The Romancers
At sea there were many men who were master story tellers. Their adventures and exploits would have filled a library.
They began their sea going career signing on with Noah and his ark, sailing on every other ship since.
There wasn't a town or city in the world they had not been to, even those hundreds of miles away from any seaport.
Wherever they went they drank the bars dry, fought off hoards of armed robbers single handed and beautiful young girls were ripping their clothes off.
The motto to this tale is.......... all of what you read may not necessarily be true.

Re: The Romancers
You sound like someone I used to know.................
and does it really matter? as long as it is not malicious, no problem.
Now some seafarers have had boring lives even at sea, some didnt stay at sea long enough, others have had adventurous lives over many many years and got into all kinds of predicaments and adventures. Some events are unbelievable in a shore persons boring life, because they never did it or went there so if a Seafaring man tells them of the things he did, it is a waste of time because they never did it and are possibly jealous of the man who goes out and has adventures.
I am near 79 and I still go out and have adventures, I hope I never stop.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: The Romancers
My dear old dad would have given Hans Christian Andersun a run for his money, but the one thing he never talked about was his war (Merchant Navy, Army, Merchant Navy ), it was only after his death I discovered things that made me understand his escaping into the stories, which were always made believable and witty.
As seamen we've had a few escapades which when we look back upon make us wonder how the hell we survived or got away with it, sailing with men in the early post war periods gave you adventures that you would never dream of today, as these guys who had survived voyages etc we would not wish upon anyone had a zest for life like an uncaged animal and it rubbed off onto us youngsters. Even after coming ashore and working/living in various countries (never the glamorous ones) I still look back and think, why did I do that? or I was lucky to escape with my life.
Well I'm off shortly to spend Christmas in the big smoke with my very young grand children and their parents, thank god for grand children !!.
I take this opportunity to wish you ALL a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, as 2013 certainly left us wondering about our future, so roll on 2014 even if it does mean us getting older, which I may add is better than the alternative. Have a safe voyage on land, sea and air where-ever you are or are going and I look forward to climbing the gangway again in the not too distant.
future.
All the best Ivan
