Re: The Romancers
John Pru PMd me a few months ago with the answer.
.
He told me he was a Drill Sergeant in The French Foreign Legion, after the battle of Dien Bien Phu he was taken prisoner by the Viet Minh and taken to Hanoi, he was tortured and then sent to work in the Paddy fields in the Red River Delta, and then one day he disguised himself as Jane Fonda, walked past the guards and made his way all the way back to Ash Grove, Near Liverpool. He is going to write a book about his exploits.
Sorry John if I have spoiled it for you. but the Truth had to come out.

Re: The Romancers
#111... Is that where he met Doc Vernon. Doc never let on he knew him. Hope they let all the secret info. they had to the yanks to assist them in losing the war. Reminds me of a true story involving a Scouse mercenary from the Congo on furlough in Durban. Was staying at a hotel all nice and quite at the companies expense after being on the ship 13 months and said I could stay there as long as wanted as was coming up to the end of the UK tax year. Could see would finish up in dire straits with the locals if remained a drinking chum of this soldier, he was really abusive to the cape coloureds who manned the Hotel. Thought discretion was the better part of valour and cut the vacation short. Only had to go as far as the airport though. JS
