Troopships singapore 1945
Hi Everyone , Newboy on board .
Researching my late fathers RAF service . He was a Burma veteran. Got him to Bombay on
the" Moolan ",now need to get him back home. He was in Singapore September/ Ocober 1945 and was on the more again back home November ( I think 17/11/45). How can I find out what troopships left Singapore in this period ?
Many Thanks

Thanks Alf, I know he went to SE Asia on the Mooltan to Bombay( my picture) , but did not realise he could have come back on it too. Is there anywhere I could check this out.

The 'DUTCHESS OF RICHMOND' arrived from Singapore on 15 November 1945. Could it be that one?

troopships singapore 1945
HI Hugh .
Could be. His service record states date of movement 17/11/45 , but they are not always that acccurate . Was it an RAF ship . He went out on the Mooltan and that was , but the confusion after the Japanese surrender gave the allies a hugh administrative headache to get all the troops and POW's back home.
Thanks
Nick

Hello Nick,
All troopships were either Army or RAF. This means that the on the miltary side the administration was carried out by either the Army or RAF. The ship itself was owned by the Company that operated the vessel as a troopship and were managers for the Ministry of Transport. The vessels were crewed by Merchant Navy personnel and all on board were under the the command of the Master, including troops and passengers. I sailed on the Bibby Line Troopship Devonshire for 2 years until she was sold to B.I. to become a cruise ship for school education voyages.
Regards
John.

Thanks John , every little helps. I've discovered the " City of Canterbury" left Singapore for Calcutta on 17/11/45 . Do you know how I would find out whether this was an RAF troopship ?

Nick,
If his service record states: "date of movement 17/11/45" then forget 'DUCHESS OF RICHMOND'. I thought you meant he arrived in Liverpool on or about that date.
Regards
Hugh
