    Default port boats in 1970's

    hi robert + dave spence,

i was on Port Caroline in 1975 - we loaded in Royal Docks and went to kiwi via south pacific islands and then back to avonmouth, then drydocked in north shields and then i paid off in hull. after that was on PNP for a voyage light ship from russia to kiwi & back to Sheerness, and then joined Port Nicholson in Singapore on Christmas Eve 1995 - a mate of mine Rod Ford was an AB and we flew out togther with several other crew. i remember some of us having to have our hair cut in Singapore airport before they would let us in ! we went to kiwi and loaded and back to liverpool.
after that i went with bubbles simeon & clem thorpe to bring a red double decker bus back from Calcutta to Bournemouth ( because wesey couldnt do the trip with them - many port line people will know about this bus ) - it was a run job with a diference !
After getting the bus back the 3 of us joined the Port Auckland in avonmouth and took her out to Singapore to be converted to a live sheep carrier.
After that i did a round trip from liverpool to kiwi and back to liverpool on PNP - Feb to May 1977.
By then most of the Port boats were being sold so i did 4 months on Cunard Countess in 1977, and then joined Blue Star and stayed with them til 1985.
I heard that bubbles simeon emigrated to Timaru - i last saw Clem years ago at Warsash when we were both on var courses there - i think he was on the Atlantic Conveyor then. I wud love to know where these guys are now + the other port line guys i sailed with - they were mostly a great buch. i remember the AB from Cardiff that i sailed with on the port caroline - he was Fred Miles, and i wonder what happened to Fred - anther cracking bloke. i last saw him when transiting the panama canal when i was i on a Blue Star ship in the early 80's. i cant believe that that is nearly 30 years ago.
    cheers, david allan

Missed you on all occasions David....I left the Caroline in Singapore, it must have been when you joined it in drydock in Sembwang. I paid off the Port Auckland in Avonmouth from deep sea, I believe she went to Singapore after that...Havent heard anything of Bubbles and Clem since around that time...Take care...

hi dave,I hope your in fine fettle, dont suppose you remember me i was on the brisbane 74 and 75 my first trip as galley boy with the big horrible chief cook called tiny, we done south africa biera, kiwi and the med.paid off falmouth and rejoined in liverpool, to aus happy days, stayed with port for another few trips. was in colombo i think,on the st.Lawrence and the brisbane was there on its way to scrap,we were on the hook so couldnt go aboard.dipped flags as she went past, very sad,do you still have contact with oggy, froggy and gordon?(sounds like a dodgy firm of solicitors)met scottish dave a steward on the brisbane in aberdeen some years later he was on the supply boats i was trying to get on the rigs,no luck ended up on the concrete gang in the building game, still in it had to pack the merch in only one sec.cook/bkr on a ship and then no ships spent more time on the pool than at sea..one more trip..one more trip...tommy rourke
