    Default Port Caroline 1950 Picture

This was in our local paper yesterday and may be of interest to any ex Port Line guys.
I have emailed the journalist in question to put her straight on the companies as she has got Port Line mixed up with Blue Star.

I know there are a few other ex trawler men on this site who will confirm that deep sea trawlers are a different kettle of fish (pardon the pun) to other vessels we sailed on, what you try to avoid on a general cargo ship is being beam onto the sea, on the distant water 'Sidewinder' trawlers you spent most of your life beam onto the sea as it made getting the nets in easier, and in really bad weather you often said 'sh*t' lets hope she comes back up again, up in Iceland, Bear Island and the Arctic the situation was made worse by all the ice being carried on the masts which had to be constantly chopped away, not all vessels succeeded unfortunately.

You would have enjoyed it Richard, I know I did in a perverse sort of way, perhaps it was the getting home alive every time that made it worthwhile
