John 39, could not agree more about Rostock, was there in 1964, when it was eastern Germany, a real miserable place, sounds like not much has changed.

Ivan, re #3, Sorry mate I'm behind the times. The stuff hit the fan here the other day. Somebody wrote a paper that claimed African slaves learnt many things, English, reading and writing and should be grateful for slavery. That went over like a lead balloon.

    Can understand the feeling Rodders.
But there are ,many who will agree with the statement, many see such people as savages.
But no matter where people come from they all have the right to be treated in a dignified manner, sadly not all see it that way.

My wife and I were talking about the migrant system and we have decided that nothing has changed. Many here will remember the war and the movement of children away from the bombing, at the time we were watching Escape To the Country, and they where in Keith's neck of the woods, and they showed Osbourne house, built for Queen Victoria so she could be away from the smell of London, and we starting talking about why little kids should be taken in by families that where trying to survive and feed their own kids, but they did it. Now how many palaces, estates, hunting lodges etc did the Royal family have laying empty? Those kids, the future of the UK many on this site should have been accommodated in those places, why not?

A lot of stately homes were requisitioned during the war Des. More would have been I suppose but for the lack of people to man them. My mother for example worked in the Hawker Hurricane Factory in Kingston on Thames she was and accepted trained fitter and turner and worked on a lathe. On leaving school at 14 she went into domestic service and worked for Lady Bowes Lyon ( the late Queens Mother) and communicated with her after she married George V1. So she had a varied working life house maid to fitter and turner. On the post on writing books she was always saying she was writing one but would never show it to anyone , when she died my brother who still lived at home did all the funeral arrangements and as said previously took her ashes back to Scotland I asked him what he did with the manuscripts and he said he put them in the bin . They would I have no doubt been very interesting , maybe he thought they may of been slanderous if he read them . JS
A bit further on stately homes my uncle in law the one after Dunkirk who turned up with a piano accordion instead of his rifle was a gardener at Hampton Court, his wife my Aunt was in charge of all the public conveniences there, so no shortage of manure, and my cousin Ruth was the first sergeant and then Female Inspector of the MOD police
There and had a tied house in Bushy Park across the road. Stayed there a few times she was a good drinking partner and had a huge bar in the cottage. Cheers JS

After the war we lived in a requisitioned house run by local council.
It was one of 20 in an avenue in South London.
All had been the houses of landed gentry prior to the war.
All turned into flats on three levels, we were on the top one which by the looks had been the servants quarters.
The bath was in the kitchen, had a wood top which we used as the dinning table.!!!!!!!!!!!!

If caught short for a sweet John could always slip your hand under the top and produce the bar of carbolic soap as a stand in ? JS

    Absolutely correct Marion.
If those pushing for reparations looked at the initial sources, ie, their very own fore-bearers, and asked them to atone "For the Wrongs of centuries past....." It might be a start......But: Good luck with that one.

As for knife crime: It is simple logic..... if 90% of the victims are non-white, and 90% of the perpetrators are black ......who should the Police prioritise for stop-&-Search? It's not rocket science is it?
What happened to the maxim: "Prevention is always better than the cure."? Sod the sensibilities: Apply logic and avoid these needless deaths.

Also, what is self-evident is whenever such a tragedy occurs..... we are always shown the mother of the victim weeping-n-wailing over her loss, but, very rarely do we see the father......Mmm?
This applies whether the mother is of the victim or of the assailant: Only the narrative changes: "He's such a lovely boy" ( No, sorry: He's a man.....end of.) I appreciate a mothers pride....and it hurts.

Jails: Indeed. They are full to bursting and it is only a question of time before we have a major tragedy on our hands...as we have seen in some prisons in Central and South America.
Many are operating at 40% of minimum staffing levels, not simply to due to "cut-backs" (the casual excuse of the Left, sadly) but to the increased stress on personnel due to overcrowding, in antiquated infrastructure.

Nowhere, can I find information as to just what the prison population is made up of....and the reasons for their incarceration. But I will hazard a guess: Mostly Illegal Immigrants deemed dangerous by the home office.

This has a knock-on effect of course: Common criminals in the UK (of ALL races and backgrounds) know full well, that short of a serious violent crime, they are unlikely to face jail time as a punishment.
But, more worryingly....it is leading to the demoralisation of our Law Enforcers: The Police must be sick and tired of seeing dangerous criminals being released, after trial, with meaningless punishments.
And what is the cost to society to ensure that these pathetic sentences of "Community Work" are carried out to any degree as a "punishment". They are laughing in face of society.....until tragedy strikes them...of course.

And so the vicious circle continues.

Anyway, Marion....not much room left on the Postcard!

We have, or almost had, a situation where the state premier wanted to change the age of responsibility from 10 to 14.
Great, then the drug runners could use a 13 year old to do the bit and if caught no charge as under age.

Then we have 'safe' injecting rooms where you can under supervision pump your body full of illegal substances.
Stops people dying we were told.

Well when was it compulsory to take such drugs???????????????????
