Floods
Had some of the heaviest rain I have seen this year, only one road open to Cooma . But nothing compared to the floods in Queensland, where one river as of last night hadn't peaked at 21 feet, but still they had to let water out of the huge dam there; to stop the wall collapsing
it looks like half of the State is under water.
But don't worry it isn't climate change LoL

Re: Floods
Yes Des
This Rain is just not stopping and we have Floods all over the place, Queensland of course being the Worst as of now, it looks terrible of what we have seen. And the Weather Man says that NSW and Queensland are still in for a lot more, with predictions of Rain like this possibly till the end of April or so! If that is the case then both us and Queenslanders are in for one hell of a ride mate! I too have not seen this kind of Rain since we came here in 1980, the worst was in 1983 i think it was when still living in Merrylands, when we had those Terrible Floods as well.
Cheers and you take care there!

Re: Floods
Here in Victoria heading for a drought.
But why did they build so much on flood plains in Queensland?
Some say the worst for 50 years, others say for 40.
Which means it has happened before, nothing to do with climate change.

Re: Floods
1,500 houses now under water in Queensland, one family were on the roof with their kids, the water ripping past the gutter only a foot below them , so many of them with no insurance as it is on a flood plain. Now its reached NSW one town completely submerged, and more rain on the way.

Re: Floods
The building on flood plains became allowable way back in the 1930's I was told by a lady from Queensland.
Why any one in their right mind would even think about building on such, and why a council would give permits is a mystery.
We had rain here in Melbourne today, about 4mm, first for well over a month.

Re: Floods
Lots of that Rain from Queensland and Northern NSW , is now set to hit us here in the Lower parts of the State from Tonight, a Huge Rain bomb tracking fast towards us!
Expecting some 200 to 300 mm in many parts and also very strong Winds from 90 to 110km per hour! So with all the wet we have already had here, i see many many Trees coming down again as the Ground is so Wet!
So its batten the hatches, and just hope for the best!
Poor People who have already been hit in many parts , i really hope that they will all be OK, and manage somehow to get through all this!
What happened to the Land of Sun and Honey!!
Cheers

Re: Floods
Marion.
According to our weather office a metre of rain fell in four hours in a town in Queensland on Monday, half of Queensland is under water and as Vernon said it is now in NSW, Lismore a town in Northern NSW is under water, and I mean under water only the tips of the roofs of houses showing, in 47years in Aus never seen anything like it. I feel for all those people, hard enough saving for a house then to have it under water like that must be heart breaking.

Re: Floods
Sadly nothing to do with climate change as some say.
This is weather patterns plain and simple.
Talking today with a mate who spent almost 40 years with the weather department here in Melbourne, he put it this way.
There is a finite amount of water on this planet, we cannot get any more and it manifests in many ways, oceans , lakes ,rivers , snow, rain etc.
When there is a severe drought such as in parts of Africa now moisture is drawn up i to the atmosphere.
Eventually it reaches a point when it can no longer be held there.
For the past two years we have been in a La Nina weather pattern with the southern ocean cooling.
This makes a perfect situation for the overloaded atmosphere to unload, and Queensland and parts of NSW got it.
Nothing new in this, happened before and will again.
The failure is in govs and councils who do not build river levees, councils who allow building on flood plains.

Re: Floods
Watched the news, a two storied Aldi supermarket that was built up on a slope to be clear of the floods had the second story washed out, the flood water in the town is now 21 meters and rising.

Re: Floods
#9 . John the next time your talking to your mate and he brings up about water or moisture being drawn up into the atmosphere , ask him if it has anything to do with Dew Point, he may ask you how do you know about dew point and will probably think you know more than you are letting on. Just remember Dew point is the temperature at which air must be cooled to cause condensation , if I remember correctly. However he may treat you a bit more deeply with his theory’s thinking you know a bit more. Cheers JS
