    Default Smart Meters

The Government are pushing the Utility Companies to install more and more energy smart meters, at the moment it is not compulsory to have one installed.
One of the big problems is that there does not appear to be an industry standard or swop suppliers and your smart meter may not function as a smart meter with the new supplier.
Suppliers are working to an industry standard. This new standard has implications for the user.
Smart meters can report usage every half hour.
The new standard meters will then allow suppliers to have a daily variable tariff, so at breakfast, lunch and early evening you could be charged more for your electricity.
In others words in peak demand your kilowatt will cost you a lot more.

Our energy supplier is OVO and we pay £60 p/m for gas and Lecky. They are coming next week to fit a smart meter as although both our meters are outside, reading them is difficult for me with my eyesight problems and wifey always moans when she has to read them.

John, What you have to put up with applies to all new builds in G.B. These days, When i moved to this property 12 months ago, I wasn't told to check if the smart meter that is hear and belongs to Scottish power was compatible with my supplier, Caused me a lot of headache apparently its down to the new tenant to request this check not your supplier. There all tared with the one brush only interested in your dosh the more they make the better for them its caught a lot of people out. Terry.

I had an SSEcsmar meter and four trackers, absolutely useless. Number of times the tracker lost connection with the meter was unbelievable. Meter was six feet in direct line of sight with the meter.

Here in Oz they have not missed a trick as well with tariffs higher during peak times. Might be okay for those working but for the olds during a heat wave the costs go right up unless they go and sit in a shopping centre during the day (which a lot do). When the contract feed in tariff for my solar finished a while ago now it took a long time to get the supplier to change me to nett metering (I use my own power when available during the day) which I pay for any power that I use to top up my needs. Do not know if those members in Oz know this but if you have solar and spend time during the day at home it is worthwhile well it is with me. Had a mob get in touch with me about installing battery's but when they found out how much I use the hissed of real quick. As for those having to read their meters? Have you thought of approaching your local member of the parasite party to explain that due to disabilities you are not able to read said meters and therefore are being discriminated against because of this. There must be a department within government that deals with this. I know I would be kicking up a stink here if they tried it on with me. Do not know if it would work but would have the satisfaction of trying.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.
