Sweet Potato Plant
Yes I remember having a sweet potato plant in my cabin just like you described. It grew everwhere I had to keep it trimmed back. Used tooth picks to keep it in a water jug. So it is not just an old tale but true, this was on the M.V. Otaio in 1963.
Cheers

Thanks Gerald, I'm pleased someone was able to back me up, but out of interest, the two I tried it with here at home were a complete failure. I would have done better to just eat them. Cheers Albi

When I was second mate on Everard's tanker "Atonality", the Chief mate grew mushrooms on Bakers' boards in the centre castle. We had steam pumps and tank heating so it was always warm and humid and suitably dark. It was great to have fresh mushrooms daily. He was a farmer, ashore, and used to come down to the ship on a tractor, (a little grey ferguson), in home port. She was a good basic little ship, with nowt but magnetic compass, (steering to quarter points). We used to get free meat from the local butcher in Leith, who got all the drainings from our discharge hoses, (This could be up to 50/100 gallons, so he ran his van for free!).

Hi Albert,
I think you have to use the purple sweet potato called a Kumera, we used to get them in NZ. They are available in the local woolies in Brisbane.

Never tried sweet potato but did it with avocado stones. They are aesy to grow and I have two now growing in my back yard. They will not fruit though as you need correctly cross polinated ones for that.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Thanks again Gerry, Can't say I've seen the purple ones you mention, but I'll check, I just want to prove to all those of a doubting nature that they work. Might try your avocados John but they won't like our English winter. Cheers, Albi.

Albi, you can grow them indoors like an iside house plant and they do well that way, just have to keep them trimmed.
