Sailed with reverse osmosis many years ago. Water seemed to be brackish at best. Joined one ship and some bugger had pinched the membrane, apparently it was made from silver.
Think the first vacuum system I sailed with was of Danish origins Atlas? Good kit but did require the evaporator pickling frequently as production would tail off due to the buildup of of scale on the tubes , Saf Acid was used.

I recall we picked up desal water from Greece on one voyage.
Fine, but not a lot different to the salt water from the showers, but good for boiling spuds as no extra salt required.
AS to Cappy and the poor Emu, what all failed to understand is the speed at which they can run.
Poor Cappy, all pumped up and no where to go, all he got was a few feathers.

#41 James must have been early types of RO units you sailed with as the ones I worked on produced good clean drinking water. Most of the vacuum types I saw were Alpha Laval with plate type heat exchangers making them easier to clean.

#9 yes they were ships built in the 60's/70's and yes I have sailed with the Alfa Laval plate type. Number of times some one would end up with cuts while cleaning the plates simply because they found using PPE inconveinient. Was the water ever treated after desalination to add the trace elements?

#42 if floating in that brackish water John which you were drinking no doubt , on the average 10,000 ton tramp you could of loaded over your marks about 3.5 inches and with a TPI of say 45 could have loaded an extra 160 tons of cargo. At 50 pounds a ton , think of all the Brownie points you would of got for being wise and objective and not forgetting to take the density of the sea water and showing the owners of the vessel you deserved a reward which you didn’t get in any case . #44 One ship I was on had a water softener which the distilled water was pumped through but I do not remember any treatment being added, distilled water is pretty tastless but drinking it chilled in a roasting hot engine room it tasted great.

Ah the old CO2 systems and brine rooms, cold after watch beers always a pleasure and something to look forward.
Drinking desalinated water horrible stuff. Use to treat it with metering pumps adding calcium and magnesium. Drinking desalinated water could lead to health issues later in life.

Marian re #34. For some reason I cannot get a thanks and likes to your post......Consider your liked and thanks from me. I do not know you on a personal level, but so you know. I do enjoy your posts, even the ones that I may have a difference of opinion. Not many of them though. Your posts are well thought out and I learn a lot from them, Thanks and like again.

#48 It’s a well known fact that a lady’s brain is larger and more methodical than the males.My own brain I had to go for tests a couple of weeks ago for tests, x rays and such the results showed in fact I had minor strokes in the past 6 months , so that clears it in my mind that they were the cause of various falls. When asked previously how and why I fell I had to say I don’t know. Anyone who now asks as they suffer similarly I can now say , go and get your head tested . Cheers JS.

Still on water but a bit off, We used to wash down the whole ship whenever we sailed through the Sweet water Lakes in the Panama Canal,
On the news the other night showed the Canal closed for lack of water after some huge storms, loads of ship waiting to come through, apparently there was insufficient water to flood the various locks.
