to ride the dock road on the no1 to dingle the forests of masts the thousands on bikes the smells packed road some horse and carts going to the sugar berth the different nations of all colours coming and going the cafes all full smell of bacon cooking now its empty from one end to the other shame how time has passed? jp

i remember pinching two big tea mugs from stan waters cafe the deck crew went mad when they saw them best time watching the sun up/down with a big mug coffee/tea..the things this site brings out in you??jp

in 1958 i was sent from shields pool to liverpool i was 17 years old ....i was young and didnt ask why ....was given a train ticket to lime st ......had a suitcase and was told to join the vessel in the langton dock if i remember clearly .....i came out the station and asked a guy which way was it to said dock ......being short on funds off i set ....dragging the suitcase which appeared to get heavier......i dont know how far it was from lime st but it was a summers day and hot ....it may have been the dock opposite the langton pub ....does any scouser know how far that was ....i am sure i can remember the overhead rail but it was not in use i believe and lumps were missing out of it....but then that is 63 years ago...so all may not be as i remember ....R683 532

as a kid there was a compound with yanks cleaning all the weaponry must have been from korea we as kids used to play on then one of the airmen said to us do you go camping he gave us this kit bag the size of one of us and we had the tent up all summer they let us clean out the cabs on the two and a half trucks for the ciggies and book matches left in them what times for kids? jp

aye lewis but hungry ...thirsty ...and about 2 bob in me pocket.....and as for suitcase signing on for two years to mutch gear ...now on the ore carriers home every few weeks got me gear in a carrier bag......happy days

Cappy if you had studied at school and passed exams you could have been chief galley boy on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Surrounded by bucketfulls of Jersey Royals and King Edward's, no union to complain about.

many a tin of salmon come over the dock wall all the cases of broached cargo were dumped down the bank all the tinned food that went home with me and many a docker looking for his swag that vanished by the first radar tower by the devils ladder what a childhood we had the food of kings that nobody could afford but we shared with neighbors always. jp

Why no louis got me own 30 footer slept 6 complete with flying bridge ...all me mates on weekends ....no union aboard her ....even had me bank manager peeling tatties for the pot...... my boat was named harbour lights .......but thats capitalism for you louis ....but if you were willing to keep the union blaggers with your weekly income well good for you ...just like russia you pay your dues and the commisariat live in luxury .....while the peggy gets the pennies.....ps never ashamed of being a galley boy ....nor ashamed of having to pay 40 percent tax .....it keeps the losers in bread....but just remember we all start at the bottom sadly some just stay there......cappy
