Re: Liverpool docks of old
When I first went to sea in 69 the port of Liverpool was still reasonably busy then but fast disappearing compared to what it had been. I am not sure if anything even goes into Birkenhead docks now. The ferry that runs to Belfast is even on a riverside birth.

When I was growing up in Liverpool I thought that everything, everywhere was made of black stone. The Clean Air Act revealed the most beautiful buildings that had been hidden for years.

The revolutionary Old Dock was discovered during excavations in 2001, after being buried since 1826.

Unfortunately Brian they were never paid a decent wage for all that very very tough work they were doing, left it open for stirrers.

Re: Liverpool docks of old
When you look at some of the cargo ships of that era, some of only about 10,000 tons.
Yet they carried all the cargo needed.
Now we have bloody great container ships, some of over 145,000 tons.
How did we manage then with such small ships.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Liverpool docks of old
According to literature I. Have read a large percentage of the worlds tonnage was around 10,000 tons and this was mainly tramp ships. They were restricted to that size mainly because of draft and being able to get into ports bigger vessels couldn’t . The draft of a 10,000 tramp was usually between 28 - 29 feet . So got to places others have never seen.JS.
