Thanks for that Vic I found it very informative and very detailed and I think backing up a lot of what you probably already knew about it . I would have said that it had been a political decision tied up with the IMF loan and the order for the F1 11 from America as decided by Denis Healey and Harold Wilson but when you read into it I think there's an awful lot of errors made by British Aerospace . I was also surprised at the shaft failure in the Olympus engine because the Olympus engine was originally designed in the late 1940s and had been successfully used 4 over 20 years at that time I know they modified it but they never got to the bottom of why the shaft snapped

That would all depend on were we both get our information from, but I stand corrected ,I thought the first time the UK got a bailout was 1976 but as you say it was indeed 1965.

The key positions in Wilson’s cabinet went to his right-wing rivals. George Brown was Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, in charge of the National Plan and James Callaghan was Chancellor of the Exchequer. Their first obstacle was the balance of payments deficit left by Reginald Maudling, the outgoing Tory chancellor. His words to Jim Callaghan on leaving Number Eleven Downing Street, “sorry about the mess old cock!”, soon took on a deeper meaning.

I am enjoying this thread and it is good to have a back and forth banter, my Mrs gave me a blue streak rocket today when she came in I forgot to cut the grass, no tea for me tonight by the look of it. Let's keep it civil and hopefully admin will let it run.

Another bearing on the reason for the cancellation.
The Americans had installed and commissioned the early warning Radar, one of the installations is in Yorkshire.
When all the radar plants were installed the Yanks were scratching their heads on how to commission the system. The RAF was approached and asked if they would test the system- yes they would be delighted to do so.
The up come was that the RAF nuked America.
V Bomber flew behind civilian aircraft and also attacked America from Canada.
The Yanks were livid, slow cumbersome bombers had defeated their expensive Radar array.
The General who had overseen the project was subjected to an investigation and was asked how it had happened. He stated the main thrust of the raids had come from Canada and there were no arrays along the border-why? Because they are an ally, was the reply.
Result the installation was extended to cover the Canadian border, this was at the time of the TSR2.

George Brown was the local MP for Belper in Derbyshire , he held regular Saturday surgeries at the Labour Club now defunct and demolished , I believe , replaced by a block of flats ,he lost by 2000 votes in 1970 , his drunken appearances in the club were legendary ,

I remember George Brown being asked a question on the news one night , I think he was leaving the commons and as he was getting near the car he was that hammered he went on his backside.

We lived Less than r 2 miles from Belper although were in Ilkeston constituency and we represented for many years by an MP called Ray Fletcher . My late father was a counsellor in what is now called the Amber Valley and we used to get it and your Christmas card from Ray Fletcher MP that's the only reason I can remember him everything else about him was not particularly memorable . The excuse at the time when George Brown lost his seat was that the demographic of the Belper constituency had changed from mining and Industry too middle class overspill from Derby itself . The fact that George Brown having lost his popularity obviously had nothing to do with it . The unfortunate thing with politicians of all colours and probably across all Nations is some get to the trough and forget how they got there

Rob think you’ve been following me around the country at various times. Stayed in Birstal many times. I have two main memories of the place 1.. on the sign post in the village square was a 101 and a quarter miles to London. I used to wonder how the man got on wheeling his pedometer to measure it. And 2 . Staying at my Uncle in Laws mother’s house who took in guests, this was shortly after the war , was a guest by the name of Pierrepoint with blue jowls who I always gave a wide berth to as someone said he was the original, and wasn’t brave enough to ask him. As I was only about 9 years of age wouldn’t have known what a politician was , still don’t know as they don’t seem to do nowt and when they do it is always to someone’s dis-benefit. Cheers JWS

, but the 1967 devaluation was 40c in the pound

Si vous ne savez pas demandez a Google[/QUOTE]

yes the famous evaluation of the Pound in the days before it was a floating currency.

"The pound in your pocket will still be worth a pound' he told us all.

What he failed to say was that all imported gods, and some local made, would cost that much more.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
