wasn't it one in Scotland that moved against it's brakes and went up in flames 10 years ago

Yeah Rob , This article was from the Daily Telegraph.
Gusts of up to 165mph were recorded in the Cairngorms in Aberdeenshire as gales brought travel chaos to Scotland and the North.
A 100-metre tall wind turbine burst into flames in North Ayrshire, and in Coldingham in the Scottish Borders, a turbine crashed to the ground yards from a road.
The £2 million turbine in North Ayrshire was not believed to have been spinning at the time. Fires can occur if extreme wind loosens or breaks electrical connections, whether turbines are rotating or not.
Fraser McLachlan, the chief executive of GCube, a wind turbine insurer, said he was expecting a rise in turbine failures due to the “exceptional” weather in Scotland.
“We see turbine fires around the world when it gets very, very windy,” he said. “They usually shut themselves off as a safety feature if the wind gets too much. But sometimes there is another failure. th.jpg

that is the one I remembered there was a video at the time, a few of the smaller feasibility study types had spectacular electronics failures too , it is one big green gimmick

I wonder what happened to the plans that Southampton had to tap into the geothermal power that supposed to be in existence in that area. As i recall the talk was back in the 60s, kt

It was done at the time but that area has been quite redeveloped over the years so I don't know if it's still there but it certainly was done and was working well

We have been told here in Oz that a wind speed of 15 knots is the min to get the turbines turning and when it goes over 45 knots they must be shut down.

Solar panels, and I have some, vary in their efficiency depending on the season. Spring and Autumn produce the best results. Not so good in winter when the sun is low in the sky and in summer if the heat goes above 38 degrees the system shuts down to prevent damage.

But of course the 'Greens' are telling us how many jobs will be created with the clean energy systems.
Well the panels come from Germany and the wind turbines from Sweden!!
Once in place they only require a small team for maintenance.
Closed power station along with the associated brown coal mine saw the loss of about 1,000 jobs.

But now the feral gov has plans to turn the brown coal into hydrogen and sell to Japan.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Has anyone projected what the increase in electricity will be when electric cars become more popular. Who will be saying thank you greens when power goes off at sundown when sun sets, wind often drops, and every one is cooking evening meal, watching telly, showering and using AC. Only countries using coal, gas and nuclear.

Don't think it will be a problem due to the lack of funding for the maintenance of roads and infra structure. Governments are determined to price the motorists of the road.

I was reading a report that just said we would have to increase our electricity production to a large amount, i also recall the fact that when for example the FA cup is being played, at half time everyone goes and put the kettle on, and the demand for that pushes us up to a zone of worry. Just imagine in the winter , with all the heating, lighting, and every car using the national grid. It will of course come in gradually, but i think that there must be plans for more power stations somewhere, kt

A recent survey here in Oz claims that if all cars go electric the power supply will ne to be 2.5 times what it currently is.

But there area couple of points the Greens will not talk about.
Now you go to the servo and fill up in a few minutes.
Recharge of an electric car can take up to 5 hours!!!

Then there is the question of revenue!
The tax on fuel in most western countries is enormous. If no more petrol sales where does the revenue come from.?

It has been suggested a system similar to one in NZ.

There Diesel is about half the price of here in Oz.
No tax at point of sales. But once a year you have to have the odd-meter read and you then pay tax on your mileage for the year.

Fine, but that is time consuming and wide open to rorting by the smart guys.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
