Re: Shore supply electrics
Maybe he’s getting mixed up with Pacific Tides. None of this going with the main stream of flood tide. Did you have to do the buoyage system as well Keith. I went a long time before knew the difference between a flashing light and forgot now the word. Inter....... light, anyhow the flashing light was the one with the greatest period of light between flashes. And the Inter...... light the greatest period of darkness between the flashes, or maybe the other way round. I cut an old broom handle down and laboriously made buoys out of them and painted. And practised before facing the examiner. Seems stupid now as just came second nature later. Cheers JWS.

Re: Shore supply electrics
John 51, I took the ticket when i was 53, although had been sailing for 20 years before. I really enjoyed the course, was night class once a week over the winter and a one day practical sailing course on the Solent. The Yachmasters covers tidal heights, rule of the twelves buoyage systems, practical course setting, using all the tidal info, for eg round Portland etc, very fortunately for me, they had dropped Morse from the requirements , as i had always had trouble using RDF, i was ok on some beacons, but the aero beacons was too fast for me. What is showed me was that i enjoyed it, and wished i had taken advantage of taking navigation while at sea. As i recall you could take correspondent courses while at sea, kt

Re: Shore supply electrics
The main stream of flood tide round the UK Lewis is up the English Chanel going from west to east and coming down the North Sea from north to south, if you were going in those directions you were considered to be going with the main stream of flood tide. And if opposite against the main stream of flood tide. The Admiralty buoyage system was based on this plus the top marks of some buoys telling you which side to pass on. The two floods North Sea and English Channel converge about the area of the Thames Estuary. Other parts of the coastline of the UK is to hard to explain but was available to anyone on the bridge on a card , probably still is today. JWS

One very large solar farm in Spain but in Italy from the main port into Rome, a journey of some 90 minutes not one panel or turbine in sight.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Shore supply electrics
I think one of the ugly sights in the uk now to me as a tourist is these windmills stuck just off the coast. It knocks all memory’s of my own past on the head and with other forms of man made progress consider an eye sore. To others who know no better it won’t mean too much. Whilst others consider Rusty Rita a beauty to me it looks like a modern artists idea of what he considers modern art. Should have planted it at the exit of the channel tunnel on the British side , might have deterred some of the illegal immigrants walking in. They should have stuck a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale in her hand to make her more feasible. And maybe a sign round her neck saying Cheers! JWS

Re: Shore supply electrics
We did it to satisfy Europe, with ludicrous subsidies ,the Severn tidal barrage was so insanely uneconomic they at the the French built trial cost almost £5m and proved it a bad idea . The green subsidies add £110 to every UK household bill every year

I wonder if that's because they may have Dams and hydro power in the mountains off the tourist trap routes John, just thinking aloud!
