The Great British Shipbuilding Revival
I note courtesy of the World Service this morning that a Nick Robinson interview with an MP tells of a plan to build frigates etc at our yards. Prices will be at 'Mates rates' (whatever that means) and competitive. My own opinion is that the idea with turn to the proverbial. If you want the best in shipbuilding look to Japan. If you want a cheaper alternative settle for China.

Re: The Great British Shipbuilding Revival
Thanks for that John. I have it on line now. I have my doubts about our capability as I think many of the skills are lost. Let's just wait and see.

Re: The Great British Shipbuilding Revival
You may have doubts Jim about our shipbuilding capability but the Royal Navy is more than happy. HMS Queen Elizabeth has been handed over to them whilst HMS Prince of Wales is under construction. Both vessels are 60,000 ton aircraft carriers and have been built on the Clyde and Rosyth.

Bae, Govand and Scotland are more than capable of building the next generation of RN ships.

That is all good news but, I recall a little while back Camel Lairds were struggling to find competent welders to complete a contract resulting in a minor village of caravans being created thereabouts full with Polish welders on loan from Gdansk/Gdynia. A little editorial license is given above.

Jim this was also the case in H&W not so log ago they had a ship in for repair and had to contract in Polish welders. I remember reading an online article from the Belfast Telegraph, that is how far our skills levels have dropped, bloody disgusting.

Hi Vic
They also have 2 ro/ro ferries under construction for CalMac. I see them most days when going through Port Glasgow.

That is my main concern. The youth of today are not enticed by work unless it has some 'glamourous ' ring to it.
