Talking of playing for fags I remember when I first went away ,bell boy Empress Of France, six boys in the cabin and we played poker for cigarettes. The thing was we played with cigarettes,we didn't play with matchsticks for chips, your two and up you two and throw four fags in.Heaps of cigs on the table ending up slightly worn and losing tobacco out of the ends, before tips.

When I left the MN 1960 I went to see the film Sink the Bismarck, I used to roll my own fags and so did my Brother in law
the difference was he used cotton wool filter tips and I didn't, we both kept our pre rolled fags in Old Holborn tins. When the film got to the bit where the two ships were firing at each other I had a fag, I was well into the film and took one from the tin and lit up without looking, I took a deep draw and all hell let loose, the silly sod had put his fags in my tin and I'd lit the cotton wool end talk about a coughing fit, I was on the point of collapse, I think of that every time I see the film. Hi Brian.
The only ship I was on that had films was the RFA Wave Baron, was never on any tanker or cargo boat that had them.
Our winter down here has been and still is cold, we have two dooner's still on the bed, we were down to minus 10 for weeks , nice day today but, lovely sunshine, I think it was +2 last night.
Talking about radio's on ships; I posted this a few years ago.
When I was on the NZ coast there was a character called Karu Brown on the coast, he had this grundig radio that he had set up to send and receive, one day he was sending a message to outer space, "This is Karu brown calling outer-space is there anyone there," he was at it for a few minutes when a bellowing voice came over the radio, "This is the Rangitoto; this is the Rangitoto get off the bloody air you idiot we are trying to contact Auckland." Never lived it down.
    Cheers Des

Talking about past times and how some of us were brainwashed into Company Loyalty, which was not reciprocated at a later date. I was 3rd. Mate in 1957. While at home was sometimes asked to do relieving jobs while ships were on the coast so that a person could sail again on the same ship. One time doing this was doing most of the nights aboard to let others ashore for which at the time got 1 pound for. When paying off had about 9 nights on board which was paid on the ship to me. I went home to continue my leave. A week later I was called to the office and told to repay this 9 pounds as wasn't entitled to it. They read this fairly new rule at the time did not apply to port relief officers. I phoned up the then MNAOA, and they said that was incorrect, I was not a port relief officer, that only applied to people who did not go to sea and not to anyone else. I was so Company orientated I just kept quite and let it go. It was only after I left the company I was brought up with, that I learned the real facts of life. I have been done a few times by various shipowners, but that first blatant one sticks in my mind. JS

HI shipmates,Radio? only the sparks had one of them when I was at sea. What we did for fun was have a sing song with some beers, I had a game called crown and Anchor to keep them all happy?{royal navy game} still got it somewhere? then we had a film on deck, white cloth or canvas screen by number four hatch if I recalled that right? on a weekend only black and white films only {NO blue} but it was a long time ago before we had t.v and proper radio I was only a boy them days.
