I often wonder what the retirement pensions are overseas, I assume they are better than us. I had in excess of 43 years (the maximum contributions counted) into national insurance. I get £117/week, I did not make £3 per year.
In the MNOPF I had 22 or 23 contributing years , I cant remember and I get £168/week. That is over £7/year. I think Gulliver is right about the better deal.
Whatever Gulliver and Ajay think they will get from the State Pension, that's what it is in reality.

Here in Oz the pension system can be very complex. Normal retired persons who have done at least ten years in the work force are entitled to the full pension which is now about $490 per couple per fortnight. But it is means tested so you may not get the lot. We also have compulsory super paid for by the employer currently at 9%. That is available at 65 though the age will be going to 67 over the next few years. If as I do you recieve a part U.K. pension then for every $1 you recieve 40 cents is taken off the state pension. But for all that we get 85% of the current full pension and about 50% of the full U.K. pension, plus our pension from super.

Here in the states I get$ 1100 a month and the old lady gets $500, we also get 54 pound a week from UK, and a small pension from my union , but we have too pay Medicare $192 a month out of that for medical ins and you have a lot of deductables if you go in hospital, my old lady was in hospital for 6 hours recently for a colon procedure, and the bill was 18000 $ of wich we had too pay 250 , I had a prostate removal 13 years ago and that cost $ 35000, and later a hip replacement at the same rate, and that was only three days in hospital both times

Pensions are a bit complex all over the Worls i suppose,but normally not too bad i would say!
See us oldies really dont need al that nuch to survive on haha!

Oh dear Wilky, where did I go wrong? 11 nights $1600 just for the bar. Vernon mate I would never reccomend the missing link to anyone, one half has no idea what the other half is doing. I now only use the seniors section as they appear to know all including info some other parts do not even though they should.

Quite a record for that old guy Pete. As you say what a shame his lifestory couldn't have been recorded. Some of his early shipmates would have sailed with men who were actualy at Trafalgar, and had listened to first hand stories of the battle, then possibly passed them on to him. Now lost forever. The problem is all us guys that have looked after oursellve for the future have done ourselves no favours.
If you had never worked and dont own your own home you would be far better off,No rent no Council Tax.
various other benefits.We own our home,God forbid should we end up in care our home will have tobe sold to pay for it.Bang goes my kids inheritance.If we had never worked and lived in a Council house all Healthcare would be free.It's all wrong and I think that we should all get onto our M.P.'s to get this law changed as in Scotland.

Good post there Pete, it would have been a privilege to sail with a man of that age just to hear some of his stories unless he was one of those who never said much.
I sailed on the Cyprian Prince in 1958 with a bosun who was 75 years of age and who also had been in sail.. His name was Jensen, a Dane, and he had been with Furness Withy (Prince Line) for donkeys years. Like your man, I don't think that he had any where else to live except on a ship or a seamans Mission. He used to knock us off for "smoko" in the afternoon and then fall asleep but we always turned our selves to at 3 o'clock and carried on with our jobs out of respect for the man. The "old man" and the Mate also respected him because he was a good seaman, bosun and got the job done.

I am 75 myself now and don't think that I could do the bosuns job at my age with a new knee and a new hip
