Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello JS
Now I cannot say for sure as this has been asked in the past (Long Ago) however I think if memory is correct the Criterion Hotel was the one in Point Road on the Corner nearer to the Dock Area!
The Del however was a lot futher up Adderley Street on the Right hand side as one walked towards the Avenue leading to the Mount Nelson!
I however stand corrected!
Cheers
PS If you look at this, the Del was the Building almost in line with the 2nd Trolley overhead looking up at the Mountain! Nott too far from the old Grand Hotel also in Adderley Street
Cheers

Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is Duncan Dock I presume Vernon. What a difference in the general attire of people in those days everyone with a collar and tie on. That could be anyone of us crossing the road. Used to be a cinema up there somewhere the bio or something could get a meal and a drink while at the movies. Some enterprising entrenapeur started one In Perth recently must have thought it was his bright idea, probably didn't know they had one in Capetown 60 years ago. Cheers JS

Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember on the Pennyworth in 1964, the carpenter who came from Middlesborough always took a bottle home as was his entitlement, actually the bottle was supposed to be cracked open. Maybe Jim might have sailed with him on the same ship as he was there a long time before I joined and a long time after, I can remember his name Jim but chances are he is still alive. Anyhow don't know if he had a disagreement with someone onboard or ashore, but the customs raided his house as do not require a warrant and found the large quantities of bottles he had collected over the years. Was heavily fined and all was confiscated. The customs had more power than the police when it came to search and entering private premises. Cheers JS

Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Vernon
Adderley Street is not the same now as the photo.
All blacks only there now, Anne and I walked up there four years ago and we were the only white people on the street.
Rather scary. we had to walk in the road.
All the sidewalks were covered in stalls outside of every store. The people have the right now to trade on the pavements in competition against the Stores.
I was glad to get away from Cape Town, not the place I knew, having spent a long time there.
Cheers
Brian.

Hello JS
Yes things have changed there a lot (Duncan Dock) and then there were a few of those Bio Café Type Cinema's at that time, the ones that come to mind were the Roxy,The Forum,The Elstree,The Rex,which were all types that one could sit and get a Drink and something to eat, used to have long type narrow Table edge where you could put your Drinks and eats while watching the Movies, actually the Cold Drink was always included in the Ticket Price, you only paid extra for the snacks you wanted!
Then just a wee step up from the Rex was the old "Bughouse" The Majestic Bioscope, had that reputation as one always felt itchy there LOL!
There was also the back row antics too, with the Lads and their Shiela's doing what should not be done in public! But those days no one really seemed to care much!
Cheers
Did not know about the one in Perth JS!

Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was probably the bug house I used to frequent. The one in Perth is quite posh and expensive would never have gone but someone gave us tickets as a present. Big wide plush seats with your own individual table and waiter service. Could order a cooked meal before going in or just push a bell for the waiter. A bit more up market than the bug house. JS
