Profit margin re spot market... Roughly ... Allow two crews for each vessel with an extra man for rigshifting equals 20 men max per year. Allow 10 men ashore in office filing paper clips.. equals 30 personel. Allow 200 dollars per day per person... equals 6000 dollars a day being on the heavy side. Would leave a net profit of 20,000 dollars a day. Say the ship has 200 days on charter.. equals 4 million dollars a year. Much more if on charter for longer periods. The claims for tax reasons against this profit margin would be the depreciation on the ship, before insurance etc. Shipping can and is a profitable business, why the British Merchant Navy was ever given away ad lib only future generations may learn the truth. This only applies to an owner having 1 ship, the office staff if had more ships would not increase proportionally, the profits though would increase dramatically. JS

John, we have some very good friends in Bergen & they tell us their taxes are crippling. On saying that though their social security is apparently amazing, one Norwegian we know is on full 'benefits' living in Spain! Even does the obligatory medicals there yet apparently if on benefits not meant to be out of the country for more than week without permission? Richard

Agree Norwegians are heavily taxed but they have a pretty fantastic social security system. Apparently they have so much revenue from their oil and gas that they could do away with taxation all together due to Norway's small population but the taxation system was built up over the years prior to the discovery of Oil and Gas.
Having worked for the Norwegians and at one time having had to visit the Offices in Norway for annual conferences I found them to be amongst the nicest people going, very fun seeking and easy going whilst at the same time being very professional.

Maybe a bit off cue but just the same todo with cost of new builds.In the 50's both Cunard and Canadian Pacific built new ships not much difference in size but the CPR ships were far superior and we were told at the time that the Cunard ships cost 5 million and CPR 8 million.Cunard Saxonia,Sylvania and Carinthia,CPR Empress's Britain and England.I sailed on both the Emp.Of Britain and the Carinthia and the difference in cost was noticeable.CPR air conditioned even down the "glory hole" ideal when cruising.Cunard no air'con I was on the Carinthia n Montreal in the summer you felt as though you were suffocating down the "glory hole".CPR had stableisers Cunard did'nt,I remember one Western Ocean crossing the Britain got thrown about a bit but we got through,the Carinthia followed us in later they had a real rough trip and it was said that windows on the promenade deck were smashed.

I was always under the impression that Clan Line after the UCL take over introduced things like stabilisers into ships as well as more air conditioning , maybe some shipowners liked the old , cheaper , ways

Some of the Cunard ships had stabilisers, But they would not use them as it created a drag and burned up more fuel.
It was cheaper to do somersaults.
I was QM in the wheelhouse on the Media, all the windows on the prom deck were smashed by the twisting and corkscrewing of the ship in seas that were diabolical, December 1955, At that time I wished I had joined the Air Force.
I asked the Mate on watch. if they should put out the stabilisers, No chance, he said, costs money.

since those days I have sailed world wide on QE2 and QM2, they have Stabilisers and never saw them used, they still did somersaults in bad weather.
