Re: Cost New
I did consider that the Empresses were better built ships than the four Cunarders, I sailed on all the CPR Liners, from the Emp. of Scotland, France, Britain and England. except the Canada old or new. But I did prefer Cunard,
In CPR on deck there was no or very little overtime, in Cunard we got overtime and never even worked half the time.
We needed that to pay for the Pig.
I thought the Scotland and France, on Deck, were better for working than the Britain and England.
I cannot quite remember if the four new Cunard ones had Stabilisers, I know the Media and Parthia had them but never used them .
Quite a few times if sailing day was the same it was always a race to get into Montreal first.
I enjoyed them but never stayed with them. they were very handy if you wanted to get home for a party or a wedding etc. 17 days trips. Too much ale and always paid off skint.
Cheers
Brian

Re: Cost New
Re.#20 , the Pendennis Castle used to run with the stabilisers out from the Isle of Wight , South , if anything it used to keep the passengers calmer through Biscay , the ferries all had stabilisers out from point to point , I would say they are used over 95% of the time , I believe the RMS Windsor Castle had two sets , from 1980 onwards the ones I sailed with were bridge controlled .

Re: Cost New
The Pendennis CAstle was the last ship ordered by UCL, after the takeover Cayzer, halted construction on the Pendennis Castle. She was lengthened by some 20 feet to accommodate a set of stabilisers.
On the VAAL we ran with the stabilisers out immediately after leaving Soton or Cape Town.
