Marine chronometers

One second mate I sailed with used to forget to wind the ships chronometer and so he said used to adjust it to his own watch. i wonder if that was why it took seventeen days to get to Montreal from Liverpool one trip on a Beaver boat in bad weather.

I've still got mine in the locker somewhere. I took it to the auctioneer in L/Pool a few years ago and they were'nt interested, it wasn't shiny enough apparently.

David, you could be looking at anything from£600 to £6000 for a working one, a lot depends on condition and history. Suggest you Google Marine auctions for Lincoln and Hull, they are normally held twice a year. Rgds

Well I hope you do better than our local cafe. The sign on the door said open seven days. It was closed for ten days and when I went in I asked why it was closed when it said open seven days.

ihave not got cronometer bit what i have got is a german clock ina big steel case whitch sounds all the bells of the watches got it of a ship called bison was put ashore for scrap as not working my next door neighbour worked for cable and wireless got it going no prob the bison was one of two ships buffalo the other what started 1975 a irish sea service from fleetwood to larne called pandoro p and o owend run till three years ago all gone now i ended up owning a firm supplying on shore services rope gangs fule and stores got a good few bob of that one bought a taxi after that but that is another storey

I saw a SMITHS Chronometer in a Maritime junk shop just under Sydney Harbour Bridge, It cost the equivelent of £750.
I have two from scrapped ships.

And I saw a 175 gram packet of Smiths Crisps in the cafe at Canary Wharf for four pounds.
