lerraty I have asked a few times on the site was the british defender in 59 the only tanker on which the crew ....or some of us swam down the tanks when in ballast......not knowing the perils and carcinogins in those days.......on the indian coast about 9 months the only relief from the heat........no air con....just a windcatcher out your port.......never thought any thing about it all

September 1970 the SA Vaal had just left Cape Town, when one of the passengers received a dear John telex for the remainder of the voyage he didn't sleep in his cabin.
A crowd of obnoxious South African youths joined the ship who were hell bent in causing trouble.
On numerous occasions they were warned about diving into the swimming pool from the adjacent Samson posts, On one occasion, late at night a cadet warned them of the dangers and asked them to stop, where upon he was threatened, until a Bosuns mate intervened.
On night one of the band was heading back to his cabin when he smelt smoke, which was coming from the gap between the door and deck of a cabin. He grabbed an extinguisher, broke in and sprayed the fire. It was the S.A. youths testing the sprinkler system (their story). Result bandsmen were escorted back to their cabins because of the threat thereafter.
The dear John passenger was posted missing after sailing from Las Palmas (another story).
The S.A passengers had booked a return trip, they were called into the head office, given a refund portion of their ticket and told to find their own way home.

as well as boat drill we had fire drill get the hoses out and then being a jos at the time the smoke helmet wass put on me leather stunk like hell a bloke pumping abeelow what aset up spose to go into fife with that on the smeel inside the thing was enough to nock you out never mind the smoke remember them ?

Obnoxious passengers were always a problem , On the ferries we had a group of Nasty French youths kick off on the way over on the Townsend -Thoresen Ferry , we were asked to take them back , with a few Officers from the Local Kingston Crescent Portsmouth Nick , on a very nice overtime earner , 24 hours at sea , all overtime , sleep on the way home . Well they sat them in an area of clear raised car Deck where they could cause no damage and escorted them , back , At Cherbourg they had a welcoming committee and a guard from the GRU , you don't mess with those boys . They were limping and crying after they left the shed after having the crap beat out of them . I abhor violence but sometimes it is the most effective treatment

William I have been in the unfortunate position in having to use them for real, believe the smell of leather or anything else is the last thing on your mind, your main worry is that the guy on the bellows on the deck above whose feet are getting red hot from the deck doesn't pizz off and leave you to it, fortunately sailed with guys that never let me down, who wore proper shoes and not flip flops as those would have melted and both of us would have been in queer street.
