Had replied earlier but seems to have got lost in the ether. I thought that Rob's idea was to have a 'reference library' to which we could all refer in time of need and it would be collated in alphabetical order for ease of reference, if we make remarks on the contents within that post, surely it will contaminate the usefulness of the post and perhaps defeat the object of the exercise. Personally I don't think such a laudable idea should be so contaminated. If we have some comments or witticisms about a certain word it is not beyond our wit to start another post on the word in question. As usual I stand to be corrected.

Cappy God forbid I do not have a sense of humour, a sense of humour has kept me going in dicey situations at sea, and also in a shore career (there have been quite a few). As for not forgetting I was Merchant Navy (as opposed to RN) then I think my past efforts (both on and off this site) in that respect speak for themselves. Also I have met many RN blokes (including an uncle) who have a great sense of humour, as they face their own trials and tribulations, albeit, not always akin to our own. Rgds

There must be a lot of terminology , from sailing through steamship to today's No ship days that will as we die off become lost . Not knowing how difficult it would be to do , it would be nice to have a thread with a table , in sortable alphabetic order so words like Whammy could be recorded , the slang words that die away , would to me be things like the Bangladeshi description of the machine that flew them home to Dhaka , that was the Steam Chicken , a good description of a flying mechanically propelled bird then more common things , like Tab Nabs , Turks Heads , Back Springs , Dogs Cock , an on line dictionary here that could be added to and enhanced would be a nice thought

There is quite a good on line dictionary on the SN site compiled by the members.
