Great to read all about you old deckies going on about your jargon. I have consulted my (until now ) reliable ref work by Captain Barry Thompson, All Hands and the Cook, and I am sorry to say that in his book covering merchant seaman's language from 1875 - 1975 the "Whammie" does not appear.
