Hi John.
The demise of a many shipping companies in the UK was brought about by Britian joining the common market at the expence of the Commanwealth, in particular NZ and Aus. They no longer needed the ships to carry Frozen meat ,Wheat, wool, or all the other products. with the consequence that these countries went elswhere for thier export / imports, like Japan, East Aisia and now China.
My sister told me in her last letter that the UK Govt are building a massive complex in Watford to house one and a half million Rumanians, We in Australia need to take heed of what has happened in the UK and start controling who come into this country, especially in light at what has just happened in London.

I suppose that we should all be grateful that we experienced the best of times before the demise of the seafaring days that we knew. Importantly too is the fact that some have written books that detail our escapades given this site's sell by date.

Went to see my brother Alex today,ask him about the ship he was in when it was strike bound in Boston over the docker's strike(Container's)they did not want the change over.it was Three Month strike it should have been Four week,ended up four month's ( 1969) he was in the Cunard company Ten year's,he thinks it was the ship above.Any one remember.Ken.

Terry #31 you are close to the truth there mate. Australia, NZ and South Africa did it tough for a number of years after UK joined up. Thye have now found new markets and are doing well. NZ has reduced the reliance on Lamb, many farmers going into beef as there is more money to be made there.

It shows that if the UK does leave EU, though I see that as only a last resort, they can if they try hard enough find new markets.

Hi John.
New Zealand has just signed a free trade agreement with China to take all her dried milk powder, Australia was to slow. We have so much beef in the Northern Territory that farmers are taking them along the big trail again, feeding them off the road verges over 150 thousand head of cattle, wonder how much the price of beef [not horse ] is in the UK these days. No more big freezing works in NZ or Aus, just as well I suppose as there are no more refrigerated ships. soon be back to sailing ships.

I agree with both of you, If the U.K. Was to go solo and get out of the E.U. Tomorrow I some how doubt whether we could turn the clock back. And if we could it would be years before we could open up old links to all the countries we once traded with. The Common Market vote is always an interesting debate, Everyone you speak to as in Joe public in the U.K. will tell you they voted no to enter the Common Market yet the vote swung to a yes. What we didn,t sign up to yet has happened is being told who you can and cant trade with. And that is one of the reasons we have to go solo and try and get this Country trading with Countries world wide as we did when we had a Merchant Navy. Regards Terry.

Hi Ken, just had a look in the old discharge book I was in the Carinthia oct 1967 when we were told it would be her last voyage from Liverpool as she was up for sale and also that we would be docking in Southhamton to lay up.On arrival the Bosun said she was doing one more trip to Halifax N.S. if we were interested most of us knocked it back and paid off.I belive she was sold to the Sitmar Line. regards Peter.

In regards the cheese & milk supply to China from NZ rather than Aus, you would have to say with respect to beautiful NZ that they could not in a 100 years supply China with its needs, Aus as well as elsewhere will get in there for sure the Chinese will not just deal with one supplier any more than other countries do.

Went to see my brother Alex yesterday he said it was the Ship above,his discharge book has been put in bank safe.In Boston,three month's,he said the dock work's won there case,over the strike and got all there strike pay back.only happen in The States.Ken.R634898.
