Hi Evan.
Still not there, I know I wasn't dreaming when I saw it. it was around the start of the site getting started.
I sailed with a bloke from Swansea; a fireman; who was torpedoed and in an open boat for around 26 days, remember his first name was Dave, had done a bit of boxing and was fit though a small thin bloke, said his fitness saved him.
Thanks for the reply's.
Cheers Des

Laconia ?

Could it have been Laconia? two lifeboats decided to head for Africa. One, with 68 people on board, reached the African coast after 27 days with only 16 survivors.

Mr. Arthur Holland, of Killay:
Doubt that this is the chap, just find much when looking:
Thought this interesting and a good free e.read at the link:
A U-boat commander whose torpedo killed three of the crew of an oil-tanker apologised to the survivors for having to do his
duty, gave them supplies and towed their lifeboat towards the Azores until the tow-rope broke.
This story was told by Mr. Arthur Holland, of Killay, Swansea, who was on the tanker British Fame, which was sunk
in the Atlantic in August, 1940.
The commander asked the survivors to express his regrets to the families of the men killed.
"There you are," he said. "It is your duty to bring petrol into your country and mine to stop it. It is your turn this time, perhaps it will be mine next."
News Chronicle, October I5th, 1940.

Hi Tony.
Glad someone else remembers it, it was not a poster but a picture taken by the u-boat skipper probably through the periscope. But I know it was there. Maybe lost when a lot of pictures were shifted around in the gallery.

That's the one !
Yes, Keith. That's the one, but maybe not what Des was looking for? The text beside it concerns the men who were forced to abandon ship.
There was usually little time to get the lifeboats away. Often it was a case of clinging to a life-raft and unless rescue came rapidly, cold water and exposure soon extinguished life. The U-boats were expressly forbidden to save survivors, and there was little that the crew of U-124 could do for one of their victims adrift in the mid-Atlantic early in 1941.
U-124 sank 46 Merchant ships and 2 Warships. She was sunk 2 April 1943 west of Oporto by depth charges from HMS Stonecrop. ( from U-boat . net )
Thank goodness that the Rescue Ships came along at the beginning of 1942. Their rescue tally was 4,194 men from the Arctic and Atlantic waters.
Regards
Bren Sh.

Hopefully Tony will explain best, but initially if you run your cursor over the symbols below the A (colour)button you will find Link, Email, Insert Image and Insert Video. Rather than try to explain fully used your clue to see if available on the net. All thanks to yourself. If not the correct one, certain we should find out soon, but all are interesting and we can all look further. Thanks K.
