HELLO ON ANOTHER SHIPS WEBSITE I SAW A PHOTO POSTED TODAY OR YESTERDAY OF MV BRITANNIC, WAS VERY ODD, SHE HAD 2 ALL BLACK FUNNELS, AND A WHITE CROSS PAINTED ON HER HULL JUST BELOW BRIDGE WING, WAS ON SHIPS NOSTALGIA, CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN IT, ?

A very interesting Picture and question Tony W
I have been searching for an answer to this,but thus far have come up blank!
There seems to be no reference to that Ship having all Black Funnels, (Buff with Black yes) and that cross?? I wonder if could have anything at all to do woth her during Wartime as a sort of Hospital Ship??
Just a thought!
It will be good to know the reason for these things you put forward!

Hi Tony,

How are things with you O.K. I hope. If you go to Liverpool based British merchant ships of the post-war period 1945-1980. This site will eventually include up to 50 of the most familiar ships which have sailed from the Mersey. there is a history of the Brittanic including her war career, but alas no mention of the ship having black funnels. If you have not had a look at this website it is a really interesting read. Still painting the ships - how about you?

Hmmm another internet poser. For what its worth I've just found one of the MAURITANIA with black funnels as well but no cross this time. Will keep looking though as I like a challenge.

Hi Tony M/Tony W,

If you look closely at the photo of the Mauretania you will see it is the light reflecting and the funnels are painted in traditional Cunard Colours. Having sailed on the Maurie for some time, I never heard of the funnels being painted black.

Hi Tony

Around may 1950 White Star ceased to exist completely and Cunard absorbed everything. Assuming that the funnels had to change colour I wonder. Not being a Cunard expert by any means am I right in assuming that the new Cunard colours were Black over Red. In which case the B&W photo of the Mauritannia may well be an illusion. With this in mind is it possible that Britannic was photographed during the colour change. May be they were all RED at that time ready fro the new Black topping. Just a suggestion.
