this photo was taken in 1954, the promenade deck is re instated, would not be plated in again for delivery to breakers,? what a puzzle.

Maybe she wasnt plated over on the forard shelter deck, Same as on the prom decks.she could have had plates on hinges that dropped down when she was under way, I have seen ships like that it kept the seas from pouring in in bad weather and then opened in sheltered waters for light and fresh air.
Different photos show her in different ways. fully open and only some open. The length of the open frames seems to vary

Hi evan, thanks for your assistance, but i can guarantee the photo is of mv britannic, the ss america had taller funnels and a raked stempost, britannic was a motor ship with squat funnels, typical harland band woolff design of the period. Regards tony, w.

Hi Tony,
Contacted a few guys I am still in touch with in Liverpool, all of them ex Cunard. Like myself none of them can recall the Brittanic having all black funnels. I sent an email to the editor of liverpoolships, but unfortuantly my server had a problem sending the email.I thought he may know something as he also sailed in Cunard in the 60,s. Will try again. I think Brians suggestion that the funnels were that colour when she went to the breakers, but that does not explain the white cross on the hull. Like yourself I would really like to get to the bottom of this. Will keep digging. By the way am painting the Matson liner Mariposa at the moment. Trying to figure out a way of getting a perfect M on the funnel (God here we ago again, funnels).

Hi Evan, Definately the Britannic, I sailed on her sister Georgic, in 1955 and also seen the Britannic many many times in Liverpool..My bets are on the delivery company having painted the funnel, first favourite. evens.

Hi brian, i have it on good authority that in 1934 that deck was partially plated in on her refit that year, and fully plated in during refit of march 1947. Funnel colour was taken between refits as not fully plated in. In that photo. Dont know about you but am starting to dream of the britannic. As a point of interest georgic looked much nicer with rounded bridge front. Never realised they were different untill this question came up, seen so many photos of them. Only got interested in this because my father came home dbs in her from bombay in 1942. Tony w.
