I noticed that, Captain Ian McNaught (Deputy Master Desig) who was Master of QE2 up to when she was sold three years ago should surely have known about it and should have known better to allow such a thing. I have sailed with him on a few occaisions.

Temporary venue The View Tower Hill, which was to be run by Moving Venue, will not be opened in November as planned, despite being open for bookings.

The glass-sided structure overlooking the Tower of London was due to be set up in Trinity Gardens from 22 November to 17 December.

Sources from the venue told Event The View will not be opening this year due to objections from neighbouring Trinity House, which ironically hosted the venue’s launch event in September.

Trinity House are said to be concerned about the venue's proximity to a war memorial.

The temporary space, which promised an interior garden, may launch next year when the situation is resolved.

It seems to me that either the powers that be within Moving Venue have no idea of the nonsense being given out by their spokesperson or else their MD needs a shot across his bow. Does he really think that ex Merchant Seamen are EVER going to allow this to happen.

Well lads, looks like my prepared letters for HRH The Princess Royal (Master of Trinity House)and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh may have to be sent, but I will await the response from Trinity House before taken any action. Even her Majesty may receive a letter, there are going to be actions whilst blood continues to flow through my veins.

In the mean time I respectfully suggest that we do not respond to the publicity garbage that has been put out much as we would like to send an exocet up their a--e

The Mayor was sorry to learn of the distress this application caused you. The granting of licences is a borough matter and does not fall within his remit as Mayor. However, we are glad that common sense has prevailed and that the Mayor of Tower Hamlets has rightly rejected the application. This decision ensures that the event can not go ahead as planned and that we can continue to remember and honour our fallen Merchant Navy officers without disruption.

We would like to take this opportunity to convey to you our admiration for the courage and skill of the Merchant Navy. We owe a great deal to those who have lost their lives whilst defending this country, and who have made us safer through their sacrifice.

Lord lashes out at bankers’ party plan

LONDON: Bankers were accused by a Labour peer today of attempting to “dance around” memorials to Britain’s war dead.

Tower Hamlets Council this week blocked an application from the catering firm Moving Venue to stage a series of parties in Tower Square memorial gardens, which are dedicated to the memory of tens of thousands of merchant seamen who died in the world wars and the Falklands War.

Lord Berkeley told peers at question time that the application was for “two months of corporate events” and had created “widespread disgust.”

Richard Beggs of Moving Venue told the Observer the dignity of the gardens would not be disturbed.

A spokeswoman for Moving Venue said there appeared to have been confusion with Trinty House and the company understood their application for the parties was supported by them.

She said a meeting would be taking place later today with Trinity House to clarify the situation.

"We appreciate the sensitive views of it (the site) being a memorial garden. We will have added safety and security measures in place."

The spokeswoman said the party area would be separate site adjacent to the memorial.

A Moving Venure spokeswoman said the company was "very surprised by the concerns raised by Trinity House with regards to the use of Trinity Square over the December period.

She said: "In February, Trinity House suggested the potential use of Trinity Square for events. Over the last eight months we have worked very closely with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council to agree the terms of use of the square and in June received confirmation of the approval from Trinity House. In early September we launched the Trinity Square event space concept at Trinity House.

"We take the dignity and security of the memorial site very seriously. The proposed venue is entirely enclosed and separate from the memorial gardens, and accessed via a separate entrance.

"Whilst the venue is being used, security personnel will also be in place to ensure the safety of the venue, memorial gardens and guests.

"Given our surprise at the media article over the weekend we are urgently seeking a meeting with Trinity House to address these concerns."

Temporary venue The View Tower Hill was launched in neighbouring building Trinity House on Monday night and Event has a gallery of photos from the evening.

Guests at the party enjoyed champagne and canapés from Moving Venue – the top nibble a potato nest with olive cream and rocket cress.

Situated in London’s Trinity Gardens, The View will offer views of the Tower of London when it opens in November.

Its glass-sided structure will have "the feel of a contemporary private members club" with an interior garden and canopy of trees. It will be available for hire over the next three consecutive Christmas runs.
