Why Where when& How did you leave the sea?

Hi Eddie.
Came ashore in 1959 after nine year at sea,to get
married.I was second steward with the AUSTRALIND
STEAMSHIP CO,and was in line for Chief Steward,but
missed out on that.Got married in 1960,and have now
been happily married for 51 years,but I still miss the sea
terribly (but dont tell the Wife)..

Paid of my last ship TEXACO ROTTERDAM 3rd June 1970 in AVONMOUTH saw the decline of the British Merchant Fleet and decided to get out. Joined MN December 1964 with Blue Funnel Line. Deck Hand.

hi eddie i could give you a lot of reasons why i left the sea some times i often thought about it because i loved the sea life but when i came home after the war i got a bit restless and could not settle down but when i came to new zealand on the ship i was on they where a few guys jumped ship so i did then i met this girl who was to become my wife for the next sixty three years i did go back to sea just for a few trips to aussie and back then i thought i should give up the sea life but i have been very lucky since i came ashore

I suppose it was old age Eddie, went to sea in 59 retired in 2007. Great life and no regrets.

Hi shipmates,Hi Eddie, Why did I leave the sea? A 18 years old very very heatlh and beautiful blond girl, but it did not work too much passion !!! so married my wife, But the sea never leaves' like the waves on the shore we are part of it everyone who has been to sea understands' that, my family were on my dads side seamen and fishermen for many hundreds of years. Thats why my heart and soul will allways be at sea, because its eternal like the sky. The journey of life is best measure in friends not miles'

Lets face it boys in the 40's 50's the world as far as we were concerned had not been discovered and all the exotic places had to be explored by us.It was our dream to travel the world and to be paid for it at the same time.And lets face it at the time many places that we went to were Thirld World kind of places and did we realy exploit them.We went ashore with a £2.00 sub and took the place over oh what a time we had imagine if we could do that today!!!It was a fantastic life,we had great times whilst we were away and when we came home with the "Pay Off" we were loaded and had a good time on our leave,next thing we were skint so it was back to sea.Eventualy we met a young lady and going away to sea was'nt very pleasant,we got married had a couple of kids and being away at sea was'nt the answer.I would say that the average time spent at sea for ratings would be about 8 years,obviously those that made the grade like Captain would be there for life.

I think you will all agree that whilst we may have come ashore to work, we never left the sea, or is it the sea never left us
