When I was on the coast in NZ they had a party at the British that run for Two years, ended up they had to get trucks to take the empties away.
Duckies in Dunedin was another great drinking hole, but Auckland was the best.
In Sydney the Bunch of C was in Sussex street could always get a good fight there. and Melbourne had the Cleo with that big painting of the nude behind the bar.
    Cheers Des

'Cleo' in Young and Jacksons , Melbourne is now kept under glass and on the upper level.

Got us into strife way back when Scouce full as a boot asked the barman for a razor, to give her a shave!!

Montys in Sydney and one very well known but now sadly boarded up, the 'J B" in Southampton.

There was a 'Doris' bar in Las Palmas where the ladies were so accommodating they often gave some of the lads 'presents' to take back with them.

Think some parts of NZ then has 6 o'Clock closing same as Melbourne.

Hi Brian, I was on the MV Cornwall in 1965 and my first trip at sea when I had a beer at the British. In those days it was 6 pm closing and I asked the barman what did the police think about "sly grogging" and he suggested I ask the man at the bar who was in civies. The barman then elaborated by saying he was the sergeant in charge of the local station !

I remember back in '78, on Star Bay (ex Clarkspey) with a part cargo of Edmonton Sulfur discharging into trucks, long job, came out of the British Hotel to find a squad of 'heavies' had just lifted a police patrol car including the 'boys in blue', over onto its side. Exit street left and back to the ship sharpish!
