Was only in the Britisher once, and about all I remember is that it was up a Bl**** long Hill. But then again, it was up hill to all the pubs in NZ. Cheers, Albi.

Hello Terry you were asking about the Melbourne Pubs, in our times well Hosies hotel upstairs was the go in those days , London hotel too was the place where many of the Ladies got too, and Matilda,s the Wine Bar was pretty popular too. New Zealand was always my favourite place though, many of my times were when it was 6 o clock closing, although they eventually got civilised and extended the Hotel times. My times on the Port Pirie were great in many of those ports

Terry, I spent many happy days in Melbourne and the pub that springs to mind where lots of British sailors would hang out was at Chloe's Bar at Young & Jackson's Hotel on the corner of Swanson and Flinders Street. Chloe was (and still is) a lifesized oil painting of a nude 19 year old Chloe by the French artist Jules Lefebvre and its stood in the back bar since Gaw'd knows when - 1908 I think! Anyone visiting Melbourne now will find Chloe's Bar has gone upmarket to what it was back in the 1960's when we had the 6-o-clock-swill, remember that? Happy days - gone forever.

Chloe is still there but now behind a glass screen. Couple of years ago some idiot tried to wreck it.

Here are some old pubs in Melbourne, Young & Jacksons, and the Sir Charles Hotham corner of Flinders Street and Spencer Street, now a backpackers Hostel , what a waste. the others are in Lyttleton, The British I think the next one is the Mitre then the Royal. I took them three or four years ago. I could never get past the Sir Charles at 4pm, had to stay there until 6pm before being ejected into Flinders Street with my carry outs.
I have many other photos of sailor pubs around the world, When I go there I try to photo them as many have now gone.
Cheers
Brian.
