Last time I saw Lyttlelton was just before the big quake. It had been hit a few weeks earlier and was not the best. Boxing day 2010 while we were in Christchurch a 4.6 hit, then two smaller ones in Lyttlleton before the big one in 2011. The town was very badly hit and as far as I know parts of the dock are still not open.

That name sounds familiar , but so does Ma Carrolls, and a dozen more .,The trouble is getting older and trying to match them up with what country in at time. Was it Mabel’s that was in Liverpool or am I in the wrong hemisphere.? Cheers JS

There are really only two places that stick in my mind, one was the Skandinavia Bar (Skandy) in Valparaiso circa 1954 where I fell in love with a vision of loveliness (I was young!) and the London Inn in Albany (WA) circa 1959/60 where I played in our skiffle group and got free beer all night. Happy days

I remember the British, I think it was the only pub there, or maybe it was the nearest to the dock? It used to shut at 6pm I think.
Another place I frequented more often, was the farmers ball. It was upstairs, over some shops, great for pulling the birds.
The only other place I remember, was the wimpy bar. Met a lovely Maori girl there and had a bit of a thing. She lived in Christchurch where we hung out for a while, and I'd get the milk train back early in the morning. Great days.

Some great pubs Birkenhead the Duke by Vittoria dock Fridays some great bar top entertainment, fill a pint pot with silver and Gloria did her thing
Then the other posher one in Liverpool, Water st . The Oriel Bar. Friday late afternoons and office knock off times. As Water St had several shipping companies who had offices on or near by the office girls used to pile in. If you could not pull there on a Friday afternoon or get setup for the weekend you either had to much BRUT or Old Spice on. the beer was not bad either lol.
