    Default Seven Islands

I went to Seven Islands I think it was about three times,a couple of times on the Oregis and once on the Pennyworth.Oregis about 8,000 ton loaded and back out in less than an hour,Pennyworth 10,000ton one and a half hours in and out.It was a good clean ore like wet clay,no dust not like the rest of the ore ports.
Beautiful scenery, did you see the whales, was it the Bay or the Gulf of St.Lawrence.
    Regards.

North side of the approaches to the St. Lawrence. Was also there quite a few times in the 60"s Pennyworth,Ravensworth, Beechwood, Cherrywood. Was always on an Ore Carrier when visiting Sept Isles. Regards J.Sabourn.

I remember going there on Denholm's Clarkavon and never even saw the place. Went to my bunk as we approached the Canadian coast and when I woke up in the morning, we were on our way back. That's what I called a quick turnaround.

Like the others have indicated - on the North shore , about 380 nm from Cape Ray and just past
Anticosti island. Marvelous place , been there many times on the Denholm Ore carriers.

Phil , you say you went from 7 islands to Monrovia. Are you sure ?. , you went from one ore loading
port to the other ?. You must have discharged somewhere in between ?.

We loaded at Sept Isle 37 times in the mid fifties.then went up river to discharge at a place called Contrecouer,we left Montreal for Hull December 10th,bythat time we knew all the ducks on the riverbanks by their first names.

Is it possible to take a different type of iron ore to Monrovia,as i cant remember calling anywhere else, Maybe if you suggested some possible ports to discharge in that area, as it was only a 9 week trip back to Southhamton and i think we went back loaded.PHIL

    Default Seven Islands

Hi Phil,I also wondered why you would go from Seven Islands to Monrovia,it's like "Carrying Coals To Newcastle" as the saying goes.Did you not come back to the U.K to the likes of Port Talbot, Cardiff,Birkenhead or Middlesboro or Manchester. They were the ports I went to when I was on the Ore Boats.
    Regards.

    Wink

When I was a kid we had a place called Seven Islands on Mitcham Common (Surrey) you could paddle out to them in summer and catch tadpoles and in winter in your wellies, after you broke the ice, hunt for hedgehogs. Dont suppose thats any help there goes the old nostalgia thingy again.
