    Default Condessa And Rippingham Grange

I did two "Run Jobs" Liverpool to London one on the Condessa the other the Rippingham Grange. It was'nt a bad deal at the time if you wanted to be home for a bit longer.Leave Liverpool maybe Thursday arrive London Saturday pay off with about Ģi3-00 train back to Liverpool and out Saturday night with a few bob.
But what I wanted to say is that if I would've been given the chance to work by in London and go deep sea on one of these I would've jumped at it.Both ships seemed to have something about them that I can only imagine made for a good trip.
Is anybody on here that sailed on either of these ships that can say what kind of a trip they had, good or bad.
    Regards.
    Jim B.

    Hi Jim,

Well here is another reply to your quest on Houlder Brothers.
First let me say I was just an assistant steward, in fact my first trip on Houlders down to BA on the Ledbury I was the galley boy.
I did make one trip on the Rippingham Grange to New Zealand, I was the Captain's Stewart "Tiger". I signed on for a second trip but never made, due to the fact the night before sailing I met a girl in a Fish & Chip shop in Blackheath, S.E. London, and finnished up spending the night sleeping on Black Heath with her...
Time we woke up, got up there was not the time for me to go home and get my gear.
What was the trip like, it was good Captain Owen and I got really well together, I used to sit for hours with him in his cabin mainly he telling me stories, and the poor old Chief Steward doing his nut in looking for me. The Chief Steward said I had to tell the Captain that I could not spend so much time with him. Clearly that was not in my best interest so I told the Chief Steward you tell the Captain, he replied I can't do that.

    All the best Charles

Hi Jim. I sailed on the Rip left Bidston B Head Jan 25 1958 for a MANZ 9 monther has chippy's mate, we had a plonky chippy who payed of after 3 months and I was made chippy. I did a further 5 month trip has chippy with a lad Joe Collins from L/Pool who sailed has Chippy's Mate, both the trips we were under charter to Shaw Savill. I found the Rip ok and enjoyed both trips .
    All the Best Tony D

    Default s/s Ledbury

    Hi Charles,

I sailed as sos on Ledbury to BA in 1948 having joined her at Victoria docks in May. We discharged in Liverpool in September. Not much I remember that wasn't normal routine, but a good voyage none the less.
Take care and all the best
    Bill

I joined the Condessa as an EDH in Bordeaux in 1962. She'd been lying there with a cargo of frozen meat for over a year.
We discharged in Valencia and then took her to La Spezia for scrap.
