Ore ships

I served as an R/O on the Orepton and Oremina. Went all over the place and I well remember Irnham, what a pit of place that was. They were good old ships, in fact because I was a long serving R/O I made the Orepton my ship and only had a relief when I went on leave. I had served on Tankers, on suite bedroom and dayroom, but the accomodation on the Ore ships although old, was something special, and the bar had been lovingly furnished. It was a pleasure to serve on the old buckets. I was an R/O who was actually employed by a radio company so I had no connection to Holders other than being on the ships.

Hi There.
I was on the Orelia,way back in the 50s,like you I realy
enjoyed my time on board,not bad ships with single berth
accomodation.Went from Port Talbot to Bone in North Africa
then to Irlam on the Manchester Ship Canal,then up to Narvik
in Norway,reapeted this a couple of times,but then I got fed up
with the same Ports over and over again,so I left,but they were
great times,and I realy enjoyed my nine years at sea,would love
to do it all over again.

Hi Haytch, welcome aboard mate. I sailed as R.O. on the River Afton, one of Huntings ore carriers back in 1960/61 .On her for 10 months , running between Ijmuiden and Pepel. Had a memorable 21st birthday aboard her, good times, good mates , great days.

Dave, I guess I mighthave been there too, depends when in the 50's. I did my first trip as an apprentice on the Orelia in 1958. I think I joined her in Irlam. I have mislaid my disc.book but I believe we went to Pepel,Bone,La Goulette,Narvik,Seven Islands, Almeria among others. Not sure but I think Neal was the Master and ther may have been another. I later did time on other Ore boats in betweenother Houlder ships.

My first ship in 1957 was the Loch Ranza to my recollection an old empire boat. I think she was an Houlder Bros. ore carrier. We went to Bone (algeria), Pepal, Seven Islands and Narvik. Will never forget my first day on board as galley boy and being told to peel and enormous bag of spuds (before breakfast).

Hi Shipmates ,Hi Dr Vernon, Hi Happy John in oz Hi Mike, I was on a few Iron ore wagons, pennyworth, Dalhanna,Knighstgarth, dukesgarth, and a few more ? steel hatches' with wheels, named after a scottish bloke ? with great mad crews'on some of them easy jobs,? food not to good, on most of them ? the Pennyworth full of bugs and rum? but good bar, that was a few years ago 1968.

HiShipmates' Hi Dr Vernon, Hi D Drennan Thanks for the name my memory is useless on some names' "The scots were great engineers' The best in the world" but I liked the old fashion hatches' with wood and canvas steel bars' and wooden wedges', much harder work to close them ? but more men, skill and team work needed .
