    Hi Dave
    The Orelia ended its days in the north sea it was Houlders first venture into the oil game , she was converted in to a diving barge in the early seventies. I was asked if i wanted to join her but the appeal of the North sea was not there at the time as i was enjoying my time doing the south American run far to much on the Ocean Transport Brazil , Uraguay , Argentina. As for the Iron ore ships i served on the Sagamore in 1972 usual run Seven Isles or Narvik. Also the Orenda Bridge Rotterdam to Several Ports in Japan Then DampierAustralia Managed to get arrested there long story . And the Oratava again Narvik , Seven Isles Canada. Well could go on forever but dont want to bore you, great memorys Though.

    Anybody ever get to Port Ettean ( i think thats how its spelt) on the West African coast, in what i think was called the French Sahara ?. There was nothing there but sand, ore and flies and more sand. i was taken by car to the local hospital to have some stiches removed , it took about an hour to drive, flat sticks with the driver sounding his horn at anything that moved. And guess what there was only more sand and flies. But the nurse A+ but thats another story.

    Hi Taffy
    I have been to Port Etienne i think there was more flies than sand a place you would not like to go to again, i think it has changed its name now to Nouadhibou it borders Mauritania and Western Sahara.

    Had My 21st birthday as R/O on the ore carrier River Afton Dec 1960, somewhere between Pepel and Ijmuiden. The engineers made me a key in the shape of the ship and the doctor baked a super cake. Don't tell the PMG or Mimco, ,but I think the evening watches went a bit awry that day . Had the Auto Alarm on though.

    Leigh,for the sake of accuracy,and without sounding like a shipgeek(!),it was the OREGIS ,not the Orelia that was converted into a North Sea support vessel.

    I forgot to ask you last time,but while
    you were in IRLAM did you ever visit
    a pub nicknamed the "Stinking Stocking".
    went back a few trips later and it had
    been refurbished and was then nicknamed
    the "Scented Nylon".Any idea of the proper
    name?.

    hi haytch i sailed on the oremina out of port talbot about 1959 , then sailed on the essex out of port talbot she was norwegian, my ex father in law was the lock keeper at the time, as you say good old days

    Smile Dalhanna Huntings

    Hi All

    I really enjoyed the little time I spent on Dalhanna, visiting Birkenhead/Kovehar/Malmo/Oxelosund etc and then was transferred to a wreck of a chemical carrier in Holland called Stolt Tiger.
    This was in 1973---I seem to remember the 2/E was Paul Santos and I think Tommy Elliott from S Shields was 3rd--Mick Hawkins from Hexham (Acomb) was 4th
    The bars on board were excellent and it was a very happy vessel---4 CYL Rowan Doxford
