Cough From the Fires
When the fires raged through here the smoke was that thick one couldn't breath, and consequently I got a basward of a cough, that was in January, I couldn't shake it off and it got worse. Anyway two weeks ago I found some old antibiotics belonging to my wife, I know you are not supposed to use other peoples meds BUT this was getting bad. I started taking them and my cough was getting a bit better, come that last pill and I thought I would celebrate with a glass of no no wine, Well I had only taken a sip, when I had to dash for the toilet and both ends exploded, the result a shaky person emerged, but within a few days my cough after nine months had stopped.
Moral of this story, don't listen to your DR and take any old meds it may cure you.

Re: Cough From the Fires
Pleased to hear you are now free of coughs and sneezes which of course spread diseases.
I always adhere to. That old saying ... It’s not the cough that carries you off, it’s the coffin they carry you off in. At least that’s my excuse for any tots of alcohol on the go. Cheers. JS.

Re: Cough From the Fires
As a young lad being given Sulphur mixed with treacle, not sure what for.
Epsom Salts and all manner of other stuff, YUK!
Thankfully do not need any form of medication that does not contain alcohol.
Not had a cold in about 15 years and only once the Flu in 1972.
Had a full medical the other week, nothing to see here said the GP.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Cough From the Fires
My old man used to just pour the dry powder of a Beechams powder down his throat from the paper sachet. He used to swear by them. As kids we grew up with diluted orange juice, spoonfuls of malt, and Codliver oil. Courtesy of the wartime ministry of health. Never saw an egg or a banana until after the war, liked the powdered egg variety very much. Why they ever did away with it beats me. I would buy today no problem. JS

Re: Cough From the Fires
Plenty of powdered egg at ebay John #5. Also at Alibaba but probably by container load.
I get a free (in NZ) flu jab every April. Haven't had a real cough for several years.

Pleased to hear about the powdered egg. Don’t get very far on the likes of eBay. I too get a flue shot. Wife Will never have a vaccine if she has a choice , so I am first casualty in line for colds etc. suppose that’s what marriage is all about sharing. Cheers JS

Re: Cough From the Fires
My grannie's treatment for a cold to any and all chest complaints was something called Fryers or Friar's Balsam, it was about four drops on a teaspoon of brown sugar and tasted like iodine, awful stuff, that and a worm tablet and a piece of brown paper, slavered with goose fat and stuck to my chest, and a big stone hot water bottle...and they ask me why I left home and went to sea! At least there you could be sick in peace and quiet and the comfort of your bunk. Except if you got hungry, then if you went for food, you were told if you could eat you could work...turn to!
Cheers Rodney

Rod, it is still available, but it is usually added to boiling water and inhaled, or steep your feet in it.

Re: Cough From the Fires
If I had a persistent cough, I treated it with Boots Creosote Cough Medicine, worked a treat.
