    Default Recycle

A mention by John P set me to think about this.

Our state gov has suddenly discovered a use for old plastic, bottles, ink cartriges, other containers etc.

They have discovered that they can be recycled into road metal.
They are also considering burning house hold waste rather than sending it to land fill, to produce power.

Wonderful concept you may say, using waste for a good purpose.

But wait, there is nothing new in this, in parts of Europe, Sweden, China and Japan they have been burning household waste for a number of years to produce power.

Using plastic into roads is a concept the Chinese have used for some time now.
They have even developed a way to turn plastic waste into Diesel by a process of heat.

Why do govs around the world find concepts already in use and attempt to con the electorate into thinking they have discovered something wonderful and new?

    Social engineering comes to mind.

Here on the Island, with limited landfill, recycling is an important part of life. We did burn household waste to produce pellets for fuel, but the big problem was we produced large amounts of fuel pellets, but there was only a small amount of boilers that could use them, so that created a problem with storage. We ended up with barns in several areas chocker block with pellets, and so the method has been scaled back, curing one problem always seems to create another, kt

john it might sound crazy but here in the UK there is a massive shortage of bricks for building we make small houses made of Lego blocks for kids why not do the real thing plastic recycled bricks lots of parts of the country is having problems with flooding and I am sure additives could be mixed with the product to fire proof the bricks? I went to a local factory and anything made of wood can now be made of plastic even RSJ rolled steel joists can be made from the polymer used on oil rigs and are as strong as steel ? jp

A UK company has developed a road surface using recycled plastic, they are struggling to get investors onboard.

What would be great would be if we could find some way of resurfacing our roads with old car tyres, it seems we don't really know what to do with mountains of the things, kt

Here in Victoria we have begun to build roads with recycled plastic parts.

We also have a number of garden items such as benches made from recycled plastic.

As to old tyres, we have a Thunderdome here, a motor racing circuit.
It was made from old tyres, thousands of them set up to build walls and ramps then covered with either soil or concrete.

But we do send a lot off shore to India where they have a method of removing the wire and recycling the lot.
